I enjoyed yr comments, but yr information is not always correct as to Richter 's history :-) = for instance, Richter chose to have scores in front of him because his memory, HOWEVER PHENOMENAL it was, failed him once, and Richter wanted to be true to the composer ' s design (as to that professional hearing / brain syndrome, it was in his late years & he spoke of cerebral "overtiredness")

It is not entirely accurate because it is everyone 's tendency to go astray, while the great Richter had a phenomenal, not just excellent memory :-). But even he was human (though sometimes difficult to believe he was only human).

you can like a lot the Chopin played by Richter, but a differnet story is the idiomatic side of it.
You can be even very personal in your interpretation and still mantain the essence of the "Language", an example of that extreme is Horowitz.
RIchter just went to a kind of Porkofieff-Chopin + and antidiluvian rudness of playing.

Interesting to watch him play, one of the greatest pianists of the century. Certainly a unique style. But there are other versions of this piece by other performers that I find much more moving, powerful, and with a better tone as well.

I think the effect Richter is trying to get off here is a message bedlam and chaos, and then it simply ends, with no after thoughts. He creates a dramatic closing that contrasts with the entire piece, definitely NOT Chopin poetry, but it works extremely well. Sometimes you just have to view an interpretation from a different bird's eye.
