John Cage - Water Walk

Uploaded by: holotone
Video Description:
John Cage performing "Water Walk" in January, 1960 on the popular TV show I've Got A Secret.
via WFMU: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/04/john_cage_on_a_.html "At the time, Cage was teaching Experimental Composition at New York City's New School. Eight years beyond 4:33, he was (as our smoking MC informs us) the most controversial figure in the musical world at that time. His first pe
rformance on national television was originally scored to include five radios, but a union dispute on the CBS set prevented any of the radios from being plugged in to the wall. Cage gleefully smacks and tosses the radios instead of turning them on and off. While treating Cage as something of a frea
k, the show also treats him fairly reverentially, cancelling the regular game show format to allow Cage the chance to perform his entire piece. "

Reminds me at times to the intro of Nagasaki Nightmare by Crass. I've been wanting to listen to Cage for a while, but never thought to look on YouTube. I don't know why that just dawned on me tonight. Pretty interesting.

Don't forget, Cage regarded all sounds as part of the performance, even the laughter of the audience. They were part of the moment.

Try to understand this piece within the context of the times. However, many of his other pieces are less exhibitionist and easier to take seriously. I can honestly recommend his sonatas and interludes as a good place to begin.
i absolutely love ... ( 2 weeks ago by LyssaxLovess)
i absolutely love music, but john cage is one man i cannot listen to. i appreciate his risk taking, but this is not worth the fuss. in my opinon. im not here to offend, just putting my word out there. we studied him in music history, and it was almost a waste of my time. if it werent for the fact that he was trying to be different, then i would have to say he doesnt deserve his works to be played..."played."

I understand Cage as a conceptual artist, and I can enjoy his stuff as art, but to call it "music" is waaaay out of what I can asimilate.
awesome, if you ... ( 1 week ago by 55Rossi)
awesome, if you stop focusing on the whacky actions themselves and get over the visual element of the performance and close your eye's and just listen, its a really trippy piece of music, even the laughter becomes part of it (as I'm sure John Cage was aware of) and becomes really atmospheric.
