It's been said many times, but I'll state it one more time. BASSES ARE NOT FOUR STRING GUITARS. They are two entirely different instruments. The name "Bass Guitar" is another word for the word "Electric Bass". People use the name Bass Guitar because it looks like a massive version of a guitar.
But looks are deceiving, the roles they play in music are nothing alike.

A bass and a guitar are both stringed instruments.
Just like a cow and a dog are animals. Doesn't mean they serve the same purpose. Bass is part of the rythm section of a band, guitars provide melody for the song. Obviously there are exceptions (example: Tool, Death From Above and a couple more).

But something i don't like is that most people think that the bass isn't as important as any other instrument if you play a song without a bass guitar it will end up sucking why do most people look down on bass? they thing that guitar is so much harder than bass BASS GUITARS DON'T HAVE STRINGS! Good one! It's a pretty hard song to play cleanly. And on the Bass Guitar debate. A Bass IS a guitar. It's held horizontally, with a set amount of strings, and you strum the strings instead of using a bow. I'm pretty sure that classifies as a guitar.

Strictly speaking, it IS NOT a guitar, people call it one because the Bass and the Guitar look similar. The bass evolved from the double bass, and that isn't a guitar at all is it?

They only made a bass GUITAR because it's become evolved in popular music, so a bass guitar was made instead of using a large, oversized double bass. Whenever someone asks me about it though, I always call it a bass guitar.
