Katana could be weilded by a single hand (like on horse back), but it's intended to be a two handed weapon.
but yeah, they are pretty much long enough to benifit from two hands, and short enough to become a single handed weapon if needed.

actually, no. its not hard at all to make a clean cut with a katana. I personally own two, and have made many clean cuts with various objects. so it's pretty plausible if you ask me.
