True. It was never implied that Kiwi died. People just began to assume he died because they heard the thud. Even Dony doesn't give away whether he dies or not.

Because he can't fly and he dreamed of flying all his life. And even though he never actually flew he was able to create the feeling of flight and that's all he wanted. To feel like he was flying like other birds. It was a tear of joy and he was happy.

poor kiwi.. we will never know.. has he realised his dream of flight at a price?? the thud suggests that, but it might be a parachute, the tear could be "wow this is amazing, dream come true" as opposed to "wow this is gunna hurt.."
