4 - Unions are a monopoly of labour.
So all microsoft employees might one day refuse to work because they want a 20% pay rise. Not because they are 20% more productive, but because they are collectively bullying their employer to raise their salary. Also unions can demand to work less hours, have longer holidays, and break any other
contractual agreement they intially signed up for when they started day 1 on the job.
how does private ... ( 1 week ago by FatherTime89)
how does private ownership guarantee protection? A private owner may very well decide to cut it down. There are some pieces of land where you can't or shouldn't take that risk (like wetlands that act as a buffer against hurricanes).
I thought we were ... ( 1 week ago by FatherTime89)
I thought we were only talking about the U.S. and it's not what's morally correct it's about what people can afford to live off of (and I don't mean live comfortably I mean just barely get by).
Some unions can ... ( 1 week ago by FatherTime89)
Some unions can demand crap not all of them do, so I don't see that as rationale to get rid of all of them.
Because if i buy ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
Because if i buy land, im paying money for it.
Im choosing to invest in land, i may decide that i want to chop down all the trees, but if i did my land would die and wouldnt give me much return on the lumber i took.
However if i manage the land and produce more lumber, employ tree surgeons to manage the forest against disease, sue people who litter or try to kill wildlife on my property... then i am doing far more than any government office would care to do.
It may just be the ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
It may just be the case that the land is worth far more being sold off for housing as opposed to lumber or turning into a park/zoo.
In which case i would dig it up and build houses. This is location dependant, people arent going to turn the amazon into a car park or hotel complex because there is no demand for homes there, the land is fertile and is good for food and lumber, it contains unique wildlife, so economic sense suggests it would be far more profitable to use it for those purposes.
People dont start ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
People dont start companies to feed the poor.
Thats what charities do, business start to make money.
They just happen to have a positive effect by employing people and providing goods and services.
If you start a business you wont pay burger flippers $10/hr when they can only produce $7/hr. You pay them up to $7/hr or NOT at all. Why should the government force you to go out of business by making you paying staff more than they are worth?
The minimum wage ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
The minimum wage discriminates against low productive labor denominations.
The young, the old, the homeless, the mentally slow, the disabled.
They cannot produce enough with their skills to justify hiring. So they dont get jobs, they either rot on the streets, claim from the govt, or worse. So few people earn min wage, if you are 40 yrs old and still earn it, you are a disgrace. You have spent your whole life at work, and developed no
skills to lift you above that mark when others have.
If you understand ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
If you understand the power of contract, then it should occur to you that unions are completely unnecessary.
You agree to do a job, if either you or employer break that agreement then you can sue/leave/fire/. Unions make it hard for many people who just want to work. One guy who wanted to teach another science class to earn extra money was prevented by his union, simply because it was additional to hi
s contract..i mean so what? It was his choice, why can he not work extra hours?
A little off topic ... ( 1 week ago by FatherTime89)
A little off topic but from what I hear rainforest land is very terrible for long term farming.
Well anyway you raise some very interesting points so I guess I'll have to take a look at all this in a different light (I'm not going to down everything you say as fact though, no offense). But what of the wetlands that really do protect communities from storms. Shouldn't those be the exception
to the rule?
Oh and I don't have ... ( 1 week ago by FatherTime89)
Oh and I don't have counters for everything because I didn't do all the research.
I guess it was naieve of me to think everything was that simple.
As for Penn, I ... ( 1 week ago by FatherTime89)
As for Penn, I don't like carrying stuff either, not my wallet, not a pencil, not my cell phone that I almost never use. Not even a flash drive that I occasionally need.
Can't I just keep a stockade of rifles and never take them out of the house?
Well think of the ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
Well think of the cost for destroying that wetland... Losing life, property, jobs etc Cost is often never considered by laypeople. Whats the cost of NOT doing something, as opposed TO doing something? University costs lots of money...but what is the cost of NOT going to university? Would you be better of going rather than NOT going? Apply that thinking to the wetlands...if i buy it and ruin it...how much will i get sued by the community when a hurricane arrives? Id be better not using it.
yer economics is ... ( 1 week ago by digitised)
yer economics is kind of weird Its counter intuitive in many ways, since people assume that the way to fix something normally involves giving govt the power to control income or ownership and getting them to tweak the details. However this nearly always creates the opposite effect. Minimum wage makes people poorer through inflation, govt control of land kills the environment, socialised medicine creates enormous queues and increases costs. Im not blaming the govt, its simpy ignorance of econ.
Ok instead of ... ( 3 days ago by digitised)
Ok instead of minusing me, why dont you guys state specifically why i am wrong?
I study economics at uni, ive read politics, philosophy and econ for years and i really do have a good understanding of the issues. If you feel that im so incorrect then dont hide behind the comment ratings, just speak up and discuss the issues. Im sure i could easily knock up some videos explain
ing the models and reasons so you can see visually why such policies are harmful. Ignorance wont get you anywhere
Not really, ... ( 3 days ago by digitised)
Not really, libertarianism still has govt and the govts role is to protect individual rights. Therefore a police force and court system is necessary (the taxes that fund this are called 'necessary evil')
You are referring to anarcho-libertarianism in which there is not even a govt or law court and people solve disputes with the second amendment. There is absolutely no taxes in this system, but its not a popular ideology since it pretty much ends civilisation lol
True libertarianism ... ( 3 days ago by walterglanz)
True libertarianism, like communism, is a useful idealistic construct. Penn & Teller's Cato Institute is in reality about corporate propaganda.
[resp. to bc9021010011: "Neo-Con Republican = no Social Security, no labor unions, no minimum wage, no worker safety regulations, no universal health care, no environmental protection, no regulation of corporations, no civil rights protections, no antitrust laws. Libertarian = same as above, but
you can get high and fuck whatever you want."]

In case you haven't noticed, most of the people commenting lack the knowledge to understand why you're 100% right.
Yeah I didn't ... ( 3 days ago by GOPpersona)
Yeah I didn't understand what legalizing those would do until I realized how much we spent to make them "controlled" substances, and just how effective the feds are controlling them in the first place.
Perish the thought ... ( 2 days ago by mrbhave)
Perish the thought of laying off thousands of government employees all at once - that might give new meaning to "going postal" =)
Pro corporate ... ( 2 days ago by FatherTime89)
Pro corporate propaganda? Yeah sure and all you do is say the same old stuff whilst using different accounts to give the illusion that other people here agree with you. And what do you mean no civil rights protection? Libertarians believe that stuff, they also believe that peace is the best way to go unlike neo-cons.
Ok im user ... ( 2 days ago by DigitalEconomist)
Ok im user digitised on my new account, i guess i didnt realise how misunderstood economics really was... so for the last day ive been on imovie putting together 2 videos on the minimum wage which are now just about uploaded to youtube so you can take a look. I was quite shocked how out of touch and misinformed people really are about it all. I guess my education has shown me so clearly how things work that it just suprises me to see people completely getting things so backwards and 'certain'.
For Penn to appear ... ( 1 day ago by VimisiDigitalMedia)
For Penn to appear on Glenn Beck, without alluding to Beck's BELIEF in (and promotion of)John Edward (the psychic fraud) disappoints me beyond words! If I missed a confrontation between Penn and Beck on the John Edward topic, PLEASE let me know! If Penn knows that Beck tryed to TRASH RANDI while John Edward was a guest, and doesn't take the opportunity to confront him about it, well then PENN JUST PLAIN SUCKS for being a little "chicken-shit"! That's my comment, and I'm sticking to it!
