I use the standard method when I do a number on paper, but I TERC in my head (apparently) because that's an easy way for me to think about it.

Wonderful Video! I will try to link to it on my web page, "What is Mathematics"? It's mind boggling to realize the incredible waste of tax payers' money that is going into these horrible curricula. Robert H. Lewis Fordham University
I had this dream, ... ( 1 week ago by MarsIsCalling)
I had this dream, and in the dream a voice asked me to stop eating beans, 'cause it would be the end of the world. "How is that?" I asked the voice. It answered and said his planet was located on a molecule near my butt and if I farted his whole world would blow up. "What's your name" I asked. The voice in my dream answered, "In my world we only have numbers. Mine is 2012." Woah dude! SPOOKY! Which makes me wonder about volcanoes...

Back in elementary school, I used the standard algorithm, but now that I'm in calculus, I use the TERC method everyday. It's far easier to do in my head.
The cluster ... ( 6 days ago by ajtaggs)
The cluster attempts to teach how to do seemingly hard multiplication problems in you head. Your brain will likely give up without the aid of a paper and pencil given the problem 34 * 57 = but what if it was given a series of problems 34 * 50 = 1700 34 * 5 = 170 34 * 2 = 68 1700 + 170 + 68 = 1938

I have a pure math degree from Purdue University...how do I plan to use it (other than in my career)? I will use it when I pull my kids out of a public school that teaches this BS and homeschool them. No wonder our kids are idiots. Let's teach them tricks instead of the concepts and elementary theory.

Wtf...the TERC method might be good for mental math if you are already confident in mental math but I dont see how it is a good method to teach 10 year old kids
This lady is a dumb ... ( 4 days ago by kassjew)
This lady is a dumb bitch. I am going to be a math teacher and plan on introducing my students to these methods. Do you realize these are the way the ancient cultures did math; Egyptians, Greeks, Arabics. This was so advanced for their time. No I don't expect the students to use this in everyday life but it is good to let them know about other methods.
You can let them ... ( 3 days ago by Iatheia)
You can let them learn these methods for historical value, but if there is a much more comfortable and easy way to do it, shouldn't you teach it to them, too? Before the "historical value" methods.
And, the idea that the Earth was going around the Sun was also very novel and advanced at that time. But no one teaches children that Earth is the center of the Univerce any more. And please don't swear. It is impolite.
well you can tell ... ( 3 days ago by BrotherRx)
well you can tell she is good at math and not a very good reporter, but i wouldn't not want my kid to learn those crazy methods, and the terc method could be used later because it is base on regular principles.
it's such a shame ... ( 3 days ago by Ren520)
it's such a shame that kids in the US have really poor math background. i think i learned this in 3rd grade back then in china. and when she wrote out the 26 x 31 the first time,i mentally solved it before she used the algo to solve it, i did 26 x 30 + 26 . made me sick.
I use the cluster ... ( 2 days ago by RedHeadedZero)
I use the cluster form all the time. I am considered to be one of the smarter people in my class because I excel at using it. But yes if i was writing the problem out I would use the first form. But I do the entire cluster form in my head and it helps alot. I hate it when people in my Pre-Calc class grab their calculators for small problems like the example shown here. On paper the first form should be used, but you can put the cluster form into good use if you do it all in your head.
To know about other ... ( 2 days ago by intuiit)
To know about other methods is fine - just don't let it get in the way of crucial development during primary school - the way kids do maths then is the way they will do maths in high school and life. Just because these unrefined methods are what was used by "ancient cultures" - doesn't mean we should be adopting them. That said - all the methods presented here, when practiced long enough, may be used mentally and can be efficient due to use of partial maths - each step being obvious to solve.

Ms. McDermott...all I can say is fantastic! You've pretty much summarized what I feel when I assess the middle school kids. I think that both drill based and application based curricula is the way to go. I teach middle school math in Pakistan.

Not all kids in the US have "really poor math skills", and how exactly does this make you sick? America has one of the best educational programs in the world next to Singapore, Russia, Japan, and China so I find it hard to believe that our math curriculum is "poor".

im not criticizing the US system,it's just that the schools don't push , well its actually the kids, they aren't pushed hard enough to learn, which results in very poor mathematics skills. of course im not saying all,it's just the majority...

Bravo! With one child in Singapore Math and another in Everyday Math, there is no surprise to me that Singapore is an average of 2 years ahead of US students in math. Your examples clearly show us why.
If the water gets ... ( 1 day ago by Haakon45)
If the water gets really high and flooding most of the world. Well i live near the sea, and dont want to drown, so i got to thinking. Maybe if we lower the sea level a bit, when the water level rises then it wont rise high enough to flood.Anyway, heres the plan. Everyone who can should take a bucket of sea water and pour it down the sink. If lots of people put the effort in, we could lower the sea level substantially and create a better world for our children to live

I'd love to see the evidence that the "standard algorithm" is the fastest, most efficient and least error prone. There are many older adults who can not multiply two digit numbers. In reality, we should never let children use paper to work on their two digit multiplication. Perhaps then most folks wouldn't need to reach for a calculator when calculating sales tax.
What evidence do ... ( 18 hours ago by sharklover237)
What evidence do you have against the "standard algorithm"? I am in high school, and will never touch a calculator for those problems because of my fluency in the standard algorithm. Also, some children cannot do mental math as efficiently as other children due to ADD or other attention disorders. However, I do agree with you on disgust for calculator dependency that many people have.
Re: Multiplication. ... ( 14 hours ago by redibis07)
Re: Multiplication. I teach cross multiplication algorithm as well as the lattice method. The lattice method works best with students with dysgraphia (poor handwriting alignment) and serves as a check and balance to the algorithm (cross multiplication) in which students may accidentally add INSTEAD of multiplying. Also, lattice works better when multiplying large numbers such as 40995 x 75029 where the algorithm is a problem for students with alignment issues.
