I've gotta say that Richard Armitage is the best Mr. Thornton. His looks and personality fits perfectly, stern and proud; hardly could tell if he loves Miss Hale or not, even though throughout he does. Brendan Coyle is also a great actor, playing Higgins perfectly, and also Daniella playing Miss Hale. I love this movie and the book! Thanks for taking up the time to post it

Throughout the movie until the end (episode 4ish), I did not care for Mr. Thornton and his looks also, but around the end, when he became more calm and kind, and now I love his character, even at the beginning! Also, see Wives & Daughters, another Gaskell story. It is also good. :)

He helps them in his way. He refuses to speculate in order to keep the payroll safe--rather than gamble with their wages. He is always aware that his obligation is not just to his family alone but extends to a responsibilities for all his workers. He pays a fair wage compared with the other mill owners and he (as it said in the first episode) doesn't lie to them and keep changing the rules. He is on the brink of bankruptcy but doesn't clear out to America like one of the other mill owners did.
