internet was ... ( 2 days ago by wonderfulskirt)
internet was invented in wars. they needed quick informations about the enemy, so they connected telephones with units, bases that were exploring and watching enemy movements and then you get a web. connect base 1 and base 2 with the main base and you'll get a simple net. connect with more units, outposts, bunkers and a net will get larger. now you have a web for sending informations and thats what internet is. with emails we send and receive informations.

the internet was ... ( 2 days ago by 123wordbird321)
the internet was started by the defense department. It was called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network)to provide a redundancy element in case our telephone communications were ever cut off due to massive nuclear war. There's a HUGE difference between a "telephone system" and the internet. This "physicist" is coming off like a crack pot if he can't tell the difference between a phone call and an email.

Let's be more ... ( 13 hours ago by NAU097)
Let's be more specific. The internet is comprised of two major technologies, TCP/IP and ethernet. Look both up on Wikipedia to get the history. Kaku (the dude in the video) is using "telephone system" both as a metaphor and a real example of how a technology evolves into a complex network that we depend on. Keep in mind a telephone is just a device used to share information. Is the internet any different? BTW - companies like Vontage completely depend on the Internet for their service.
