On Sept. 20, 2007, Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) gave the first speech in US history where a sitting Congressman affirmed his values as a nontheist and Humanist. Stark's speech was the 15th annual Alexander Lincoln Memorial 'Harvard Humanist of the Year' lecture, presented by the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University. Stark is a senior member of the influential Ways and Means Committee; a strong defender of the separation of Church and State; a Unitarian Universalist; and a veteran of the United States Air Force.

I would vote for this man in a heartbeat. I am a NON Fundamentalist Christian, a liberal and what I require of my representatives is that they do their jobs with integrity and intelligence.

It's ironic that you should make this comment and have your username. Zadig, a book by Voltaire, who was skeptical of religion and held that reason has primacy over faith.
Our legal system is based on Enlightenment principles, it's legacy being the Constitution, and portions of it are in sharp conflict with Christian dogma.

Do not make this mistake. Atheism carries nothing with it beyond lacking belief in a deity. We are more likely to be well educated, but we're equally likely to be asshats and bigots. In this case (though NOT in the "atheism=immorality" case), Stalin and Mao are quite sufficient examples.

I dont think this is a big deal at all, im sure this guy will be the first of many to admit their nontheism in the political arena. In the UK many politicains are nonbelievers, it isn't even an issue thats worth bringing up. In fact you'll find its better to to admit you follow humanist morals than to admit your a christian as this will lead to people thinking your hostile to other faiths... and they're probably right. Well done Pete Stark!
