24 year old, 6'1", 180 lb challenger Dempsey vs 37 year old, 6'6
½", 245 lb Heavyweight Champion Willard. July 4th, 1919, Toledo, Ohio. Round 1. Worst beating a champion ever took. Injuries: caved-in cheekbone, broken jaw, teeth knocked out, broken nose, broken ribs, lost hearing in 1 ear, eyes swollen shut, multiple contusions, cuts, and abrasions. Dempsey h
ad scored 42 KO's prior to stopping Big Jess. Some feared for Dempsey's life as one of Willard's previous opponents, Bull Young, had died from injuries inflicted by Big Jess. Willard lasted through Rds 2 and 3, but couldn't continue after the third round. Fought in 110 degrees Fahrenheit, 43 degr
ees Celsius, earning nickname "Massacre in the Sun." Dempsey listed at 187½ lbs for Willard fight, but was actually 180. Fought at 192 lbs against Firpo a few years later. Average man stood 5'7" in 1919. 6'6½", 245 lb in 1919 truly was a Giant. Dempsey became more famous in the 1920's than
baseball idol, Babe Ruth.

Jack dempsy is strong but he wouldnt do well in the modern boxing world. Too much of a brawler with no technique. It would only take a good counter puncher to finish him with those wide open swings.

He literally wrote the fucking book on self-defense with the hands. My Father read it, and he knows his shit on boxing. To say this guy doesn't have technique is outrageous. His style suited his era; he might fight differently today, but effectively. Dempsey knew more about fist-fighting than just about any heavyweight in history. He fucking killed a man with his hands, for Christ' sake, not to mention he wrote a decent book on the subject...

I read it as well, he knocked out, broke noses, cheeks, eye sockets and jaws, and teeth. The guy was a giant killer. He'd clean any UFC fighter at any weight. THe best fighter ever! No debate.

Mel: it's tough to hit back when you're being beaten into a coma by one of the hardest punchers that ever stepped into the ring. Willard was dazed and out of it after the first knockdown --- remember, he'd never been knocked off his feet in his entire career until he faced Dempsey.

Brad180: you're absolutely right because you've obviously devoted some time to learning about the sport and its history -- I would only add that Wills was in his prime during Willard's reign. I'm not going to jump down this guy's throat because he's probably just repeating some BS he heard without bothering to verify it. But I don't understand why people who are clueless about a given topic feel compelled to share their grossly uninformed opinions with others.
