Meh...this really is an average performance of a fantastic song. Go listen to the BBC performance later in the year and tell me differently. He just hadn't figured out how to sing this song yet and sings it emotionless here. Anyone who has listened to the BBC performance of this can't really enjoy the early version off of Massey Hall. *shrug*

I don't think Neil Young ever sang a note without emotion. It's all good. All great songs don't start out great, they evolve into greatness.

smoke117. I Agree to an extent, no question the bbc one is better, but you can't really say he sings this without emotion.

I argree the other version is probably better but he does sing it with emotion - I just think he wasn't feeling so good here - he looks a bit like he's suffering from the health point of view. Everyone has their off days.
Nonsense, m'dear!!! ... ( 2 weeks ago by EveKauai)
Nonsense, m'dear!!! - a great song IS a great song...any way y'slice it...if it's great, it's great; the End!!!! Just as a mediocre song always remains mediocre, no matter how well-produced or marketed, or if one evolves memories around it so that it FEELS like a good or great song...but that feeling is subjective; the song, however, remains the same!!! ;)
I'll say this: A ... ( 2 weeks ago by redoctober90)
I'll say this: A record store owner (yes, there are ones around) played this album over his sound system in his store. It is incredible to believe that he went on stage by himself and did a show without any backup and just a guitar, piano and his voice, and that's it!
By the way, in regards to his health, he was battling back problems at the time - I read somewhere that he had a brace on while he was playing (and I think he acknowedged it later in the show).

I wasn't disputing that the song is great: I was just replying to the comment of Smoke117 who said 'he sings emotionless here' and compares it unfavorably with the other version. I was just making the point he seems in a more upbeat mood in the other version. The sign of a great artist is he can sing perfectly even when he's not having a good day. Personally I like both versions but I also like to see the artist enjoying himself.
..my comment/reply ... ( 2 weeks ago by EveKauai)
..my comment/reply wasn't actually in response to you - it was directed at 'kammhron', who writes; All great songs don't start out great, they evolve into greatness ;) BTW i, too. prefer to watch a performer enjoying him/herself but i also accept that some performers 'never' really seem to...e.g. Leonard Cohen, and mostly Mr. Young - they are very serious singers who really only seem to perform to support their work, as a platform, not for the joy of performing per se....

Neal doesn't need any compliment from this old man... everybody already knows he's great. I just want to say I enjoy listening to him like I like cold cold water on a hot day.
As the new ... ( 1 week ago by YankeeNovember)
As the new stagehand at LSU, year 1972 or 73, it was my job to guard an ice chest filled with michelobe beer, and a bottle of tequila. Between songs came a 'black-out.' My cue to pass the master his brew. With each swig he took, he offered me one. We passed that bottle throughout the show. Well, by shows end, we both were shit-faced. He went to a party, and I got my ass chewed out. But, what great memories of one of the best.

I'm not even sure ... ( 1 day ago by smoke117)
I'm not even sure why I even said. I was shit faced at the time and didn't even remember it the next day till I saw that I was getting responses. I was just rambling...yes Neil does sing everything with some form of passion or emotion, but the BBC version still definitely slaughters this version.
