Probably never.
There are two big, fairly intractable problems with the triple rotor engine:
1. It's complicated (expensive) to produce. It's the rotary equivalent of a tricky European V8.
2. It won't be able to meet emissions without some SERIOUS R&D from Mazda. The two rotor versions have enough troubles, unfortunately. (This is one of the problems with having your own "spec engine"--you have to do everything on your own!)

It was the turbocharging that gave the RX-7 (and thus the rotary engine) its reputation for going belly up. Hopefully, if Mazda sees lots of reliable aftermarket turbos/superchargers on the RX-8 they'll eventually release one (Mazdaspeed?) but for now they look to be going the naturally aspirated route in the future, as well, with their 16X engine. That won't see the RX-8 either, or so it appears...

based on my knowledge, Mazda wanted the rx8 to be a really smooth ride, so they didn't have it have a standard turbo.
thats my 2 cents on it...but this aint wikipedia research, i have a friend that owns an rx8 and he knows it inside and out.
he could probably replace his clutch in a half hour...lol....
