The shootout: Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu engaged LAPD officers in a firefight after robbing a branch of Bank of America.Phillips and Matasareanu arrived at the Bank of America branch office at the intersection of Laurel Canyon Blvd. and Archwood St. in North Hollywood around 9:17 a.
m., and set their watch alarms for 8 minutes, which was the amount of time they estimated it would take for law enforcement officials to respond. (Phillips had been using a radio scanner to listen to police transmissions.) As they walked into the bank, however, dressed in dark clothes from head to t
oe and armed with an assault rifle each, a patrol car of the LAPD was driving down Laurel Canyon—and the officers in the car radioed in a possible 211, code for an armed robbery. Inside the bank, Phillips and Matasareanu forced the assistant manager to open the vault; they fired at least 100 round
s to scare those inside the bank so that there would be no resistance. They were able to get just over $300,000, since that day's money delivery had not yet arrived. At 9:38 a.m., Phillips exited the bank through its north doorway, Matasareanu exited through its south doorway, and they encountered d
ozens of LAPD patrol officers who had arrived after the first-responding officers radioed a "shots fired" call. Phillips and Matasareanu engaged the officers in a firefight, spraying armor-piercing rounds into the patrol cars that had been positioned on Laurel Canyon in front of the bank. The patro
l officers were armed with standard Beretta 92-type 9 mm pistols and .38 caliber revolvers, and some also carried 12-gauge pump-action shotguns, but the body armor worn by Phillips and Matasareanu was strong enough to withstand them. Multiple officers and civilians were wounded in the 7 minutes betw
een when the shooting began and Matasareanu entered their white sedan to make a getaway; Phillips remained outside of the vehicle and continued firing upon the police. A TAC (tactical) alert was issued, and 18 minutes after the shooting had begun, a SWAT team—armed with automatic weapons—arrived
in response to the alert and engaged Phillips and Matasareanu; they also commandeered an armored truck which they used to extract wounded civilians and officers who were pinned down. A nearby gun shop provided patrol officers with semi-automatic rifles, including Colt AR-15s, the civilian version o
f the American M-16 rifle. Map of the area around the Bank of America (blue) and events during the shootout. A red "X" marks the spot where Phillips and Matasareanu were shot down.At 9:51 a.m., Phillips, who had been using the getaway vehicle as cover, split up from Matasareanu, turned east on Arc
hwood St., and continued to fire at the police with his AKM. He reloaded the assault rifle with a 100-round drum magazine shortly before he was shot in the left thumb, which may have prevented him from removing the shell that caused a stovepipe malfunction in his AKM. He set it down, pulled out a Be
retta pistol, and continued firing at the police with his unwounded right hand. He dropped the pistol and picked it up, and shortly thereafter, Phillips placed the muzzle of his pistol under his chin and apparently shot himself while a round from a police sniper's rifle simultaneously severed his sp
ine. The question remains as to whether Phillips intentionally committed suicide or accidentally squeezed the trigger when his spine was severed while attempting to reload his weapon one-handed. Matasareanu's vehicle was rendered nearly inoperable after its tires were blown out. At 9:56 a.m., he co
mmandeered a pickup truck on Archwood, three blocks east of where Phillips was shot down, and transferred all of his weapons and ammunition from the getaway car to the truck. However, Matasareanu was unable to start the truck since its owner had taken the keys with him when he fled. A patrol car dri
ven by SWAT officers quickly arrived—Matasareanu left the truck, took cover behind the original getaway car, and engaged them immediately. At least one SWAT officer fired his M16 rifle below the cars and wounded Matasareanu in his unprotected lower legs, and he soon surrendered. The police radioed
for an ambulance, but Matasareanu succumbed to his wounds by the time the ambulance had reached the scene.

How is my comment above a stupid comment? Its true that the LAPDs service pistals and shot guns could not penatrate the heavy armour of the two gunman!!! And if you are currantly a soldier now you would have been surving in iraq and afganistan right? how could you compare trying yo kill two gunman covered head to toe in body armour with a handgun with killing two al qaeda members that donot wear body armour and i am sure that your first choice would not be your handgun.

actually fyi the officers that day were poorly armed. Regular patrol these days have the means neccessary to handle these kinda idiots. AK is my fav too, but all it takes is one well aimed shot with an ar and thats the end of the suspect, body armor or not

A trained officer with an ar would pwn a suspect with any weapon, especially with no former military training. They were just a couple of idiots with high powered weapons, and there wassnt much the regular officers could do.
body armor>9mm 12gauge and 38sp
ak47>>>body armor
suspects&ak's >regular officers with pos guns
officers with semi ar15>suspect's full auto m16.

An officer from SWAT had remarked that even with his AR-15, he couldn't penetrate both Emil's body armor and trauma plate.

I dont recall swat ever getting a chance to hit him anywhere but below the torso as most shots were under the vehicles. A .223 would most likely break apart after initially penetrating a trauma plate, and be absorbed into the ballistic kevlar underneath. A trauma plate can take a much bigger beating than some might think.
In the Critical ... ( 2 months ago by noximputesta)
In the Critical Situation series by History channel one of the SWAT officers said they were firing for center mass at first, chances are they did hit him, however, as you said the bullets may have broken apart upon hitting the plate. He continues saying that he saw the weak spot in the legs only after dropping a magazine or having a jam I don't remember that detail.

both of them carried over 80 pounds of body armor and carried ak47's with 100 round drums, armor piercing i think 7.62 rounds, which went completely through the police cruisers, and was able to penetrate their body armor. the robbers were able to get more ammunition from their get away car, which in the trunk they had well over 7,000 rounds, along with their AK47's they had M16 assault rifles illegally modified to fire full auto.

you are a moron a sniper was in route. they were jammed by traffic, a sniper would have a hard time hitting a moving head shot. it is easy to for a sniper on Halo to get a good shot but when REAL bullets are heading to you its hard to aim.

ruler1978 you think a sniper would have taken them out easily? Even if they did get a sniper hed have trouble taking them out because hed have to keep his line of sight on them and with them frequently moving about it wouldnt be easy. He have to go for the head shot but a head shot is hard to hit even with a sniper rifle. You may think its easy to kill someone but it isnt. Killing someone is a hard thing to achieve. Those cops fought for around an hour before they finally killed them
any real sniper can ... ( 6 days ago by ruler1978)
