This scene was like the classic "man in a dress" comedy cop out: "Put a man in a dress, stick him in a movie, people will pay to see it, it's a man in a dress."

It's pretty sad if you base liking a movie on what a critic thinks...they don't always hit the nail on the head.
This was probably not the funniest Mel Brooks film, but I thought it was funny. This song cracks me up. :)

No, they don't always hit the nail on the head...at all. But they did in this case. I didn't base my not liking this film on what they said; I actually saw this film long before I read Ebert's review. Their opinions just happened to agree with my own.

Get what? What's the joke here? If no set up is needed to make this funny, if all that is needed is making the inquisitors dance and do stuff, then for that matter the whole SCENE wasn't needed, which is what I've been saying to begin with.

This movie is funny on several levels! Reason 1: the man who wrote and plays the high inquisitor is a Jew. If you can't catch that irony then you have problems Reason 2: It is absolutely ridiculous and makes light of a serious event. Reason 3: you're being a douche. If you don't like this skit, it was not made for you. Reason 4: Don't like, Don't watch, Don't bitch, Don't post. This film is a classic Brooks film. Life of Brian is good, but dry. This film is great all around.

In typical hilarious Mel Brooks manner, this is an over-the-top, Busby Berkeley-inspired number based on a horrific historical reality. Mel Brooks is an absolute comedy genius. He got the lyrics, orchestration, choreography and huge sets RIGHT.

The joke is making fun of something very serious. The entire scene is absolutely ridiculous, but is about the persecution and murder of Jews. WOuld you prefer it to be a dry, dull, boring historical account of the Inquisition?
Better question: How would YOU present it, oh god of comedy, to make yourself satisfied and quit being such a snob? How would YOU make it funny?

It's entertainment man. The music and choreography all involving a serious event in history. It's not a stand up routine. It's not just about what's on the stage, it's how it's presented. It's theater, if you don't think it's funny that's fine. The movie's about representing different periods of history in different ways all containing shtick.
