Video Description:
A short-film about social issues in domestic-violence. It was a project originally conceptualized through an Asian-American(Social-Science) study in Southwestern College, Chula Vista during 1997. This project gathered amateur, non-film/acting major student/talents(talented students are different!) and was made in a guerilla-type of filmmaking. In addition, the 2007 release of this piece-of-work is more polishly edited with added pizzaz like graphics, stereo-sound(not available in YouTube) and adapted music-score.
SYPNOSIS: Dominique has a family consist of his wife Dianne and their beloved four children Rose, Teri, Joanne & Reynaldo(Rey). Dominique is in his 17th-year USMC career while his eldest daughter Rose is in her 4th-year college and about to graduate when Rose and her mom Dianne gets in an accident that becomes fatal to both ladies and other to be involved parties. The car they were riding-in is being driven by Rose's drunked boyfriend who will be then sentence to life for vehicular manslaughter.
The tragic event leads to a big change to the De Guzman family - mainly noticeable to Dominique. Teri, second among the sibling, runs away which will fuel more anguish to the father. 'The original ending of the story is more reconciliatory rather than tragical as it is shown in the short-film'.
A COMPLETE-SYPNOSIS is available to producers who are interested to develop the project. In addition, a screenplay can be written(or rewritten) completely. FEW DETAILS ABOUT THE MAKING OF THIS SHORT-FILM -- FLAWS(what went wrong?): Absolutely, there are many of it; but more noticeable highlights
are pinpointed. [1] Cynthia's dialogue has to be voice-over because of background noise. [2] Joan may have been noticed not wearing her bag- &-coat when getting-off her car after it arrived in front of her home (some viewers actually accused the presentation of having continuity flaws). The actress did ask permission not to bring her items inside the fictional home(shattered! that is). As a director- I can only be lenient, balance-&-considerable and appreciative to my 'non-paid' performer(s).
[3] What about Rey's smirking-face character -- how did it end-up in the finalcuts? Well- at the time of the shooting, everybody just showed-up (as to my amazement). They were quite bullying(except for Justin* - playing the Rey character) to get the project done after noticing it was getting late(for them except Justin). So I have modified & shorten the story(skipping Rey's ideal dialogue), then taken single-shots - decisively considered each as it is - and prayed that fictional Rey will turn-out OK.
Unfortunately, Rey's shot turned-out not really good but it has to be included for what I consider 'right flow' of edited sequences.
About Justin, he is quite cooperative* in just about everything I ask him to do. Too bad - I had to omit the last-shot with his dramatic dialogue(plead to Dominique) while pointing gun to his father. Instead, I finished the short-drama in a harsh way of including a gunshot with audiences making their own imaginative conclusion. Glad enough - I prep for that mini-mutiny(Just Kidding!) of others to go home early and had to be creative.
SOME CORRECTIVE MEASURES: Some keyshots were pre-planned with quick(doodled-sketch) storyboard to reference compositions. Also, I was able to eliminate some unnecessary shaking in some shots through Adobe Premiere-Pro(a robust editing program). Some reverse and repetition techniques were applied.
FINAL COMMENT: I am 'near-quite' satisfied and did have fun in making this short-drama. Also, I am thankful to my wonderful actors/crew who hanged-on and gave me that 'edge' which I have to maintain my balance and coolness.
