Reggae and Racism
There was always a lot of racism in Reggae; Chris Blackwell already said it. He told the world that he chose Bob over Peter and Bunny because of his light skin. He said that his complexion would appeal to the white people, and it did. Then sooner or later they started to buy us black folks.
Chris said that he chose Bob, but Bob had already commanded his position. Maybe Mr. Blackwell was right because if it was a black man singing the songs that Bob wrote, he would be considered as a revolutionist or someone from the Black Panther Party. All I'm saying is why won't they sign and promo
te these black reggae artist as what they did with UB40, Gentlemen, Ace of Base, Men at Work, Matisyahu, the Police, Big Mountain, etc., etc. But yet the ones who they give all the promotion and the big money to are the ones who are promoting hate and the killing of gays and lesbians. That's just
to make it seem as if all blacks are the same. Before Sean Paul and Shaggy, there were Shine Head. They didn't promote Shine Head as they promoted Shaggy & Sean Paul. So that's got to be racism. Today's society is based up on how light skinned you are. It's all a color game and the system did this so that people can be jealous or fight against each other. The media tells you what to listen and what to dance to. We saw what happened on American Idol, they never promoted the black finalist as what they would do for the white ones. The business is about image and not about talent. It's about how cute and skinny you are. They won't accept overweight people. And they rather black girls with long straight hair. And tell me why there has never been a black woman on the front cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine?
My ex-manager (Robert), and my record label (Ras Record) already told me that if I had looked like Sean Paul or Shaggy or if I were white, with my uneek sing jay style that I personally invented, I would be making millions. But I've already made millions that they (Ras Records & Greensleeves) and my ex-manager stole from me. The record label always said that I only sold ten thousand units for the past twenty-five years; yet they told me that in 1982. Are they trying to tell me that I only sold a few hundred units per year? Reggae artists never know how many records they have sold. But yet Ras Records and Greensleevs sold their record labels for millions of dollars.
AMERICANISM IS HEART & MIND AND NOT RACISM. And last but not least, Reggae is not Rasta music. Reggae is Jamaican music. A Rasta man just got it across the universe. So many people will come into Reggae music and think they have to grow dreadlocks. If Bob Marley was wearing braids or a Mohawk everyone would have been doing the same. It was Toots that invented the name Reggae when he recorded a song called Do the Reggae. They could have given Toots, Dennis Brown, Gregory Issac, Black Uhuru, Horace Andy, John Holt & Errol Dunkley, etc., etc. the same amount of promo that they had given to Bob but no one was interested because these artists were too Black.
