This was from about 1977. The best trumpet section, IMHO, MF had: Joe Mosello, Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, and Ron Tooley. Dig Peter Erskine on drums..dynamite.

This song is crazy! compared to all the other videos of "Give it One", Maynard is the only one to capture the beauty in the double octive trumpet parts perfectly.

Well everyone here seems to think MF is God of the trumpet. Not so. Runs into pitch problems in the upper registers also let's the band carry him. Most pieces he only plays 20% of the arrangement. Give me Doc, Al, or Wynton anytime for the precision of playing a tumpet.

Coke run wild. I wonder how many of these dudes are snowed under so to speak. Obviously the leader, maybe the drummer as well. If it hadn't been for the school music programs, Maynard would've languished in relative obscurity. Power to him that he had this Godlike effect on the kids. I was once one of them. He did have amazing chops with still some musicality, unlike some other high note dudes.

No comparison. Compare the you Tube recording of Doc performing McArthurs park and Maynards version. MF squeals all the way through and may play 1:30. Purely pathetic. Doc is a A+ player all the way around. Tone, range, technique. This is not to say that MF is not one of the top 10 trumpeters that lived but certainly not the best by far.

Harry James and Arturo Sandoval are wonderful trumpet players too and better than Wynton, in my opinion. Probably Wynton would be a better trumpet teacher than those others because he knows a lot about tecnique and history of jazz...

Mf's band was paid at least $150 LESS a week than Thad&Mel's, Buddy's and Woody's bands. Each Mf member got about $325 and paid ALL expenses out of THAT!

Well, as far as pay goes, I'm sure that Doc and The Tonight Show band was wayyyy above anything a touring band would've paid.. all thanks of course to Johnny C. Glad to see you still visit Jeff.. I've been trying to hunt down the rest of that Iowa video with you and Woody's band. If I get ahold of one, I'll make sure and post more.

Your IQ must be about 10. Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are DUMB. I played and teached for 40 years and MF was a good player but had many faults. This does not mean he was a bad player it just means there were things he tried to do that needed work on.

Doc's band in NY got scale, or minimum wage for TV, which was not much. Carsen wasn't the band's employer - NBC was.

Every time I saw Maynard's band they were super tight. Could have made an album out of any of their performances. Re: the pay issue, I suspect people didn't join Maynard's band for the dough. I'd guess some would have played with him for free if they'd had the means to do it.
