This is actually a really basic photoshop technique. I've known about it for years. Anyways, an actually even better way to use the path tool is to zoom in at like 150-300% and draw your paths that way. It's much more accurate and makes a much nicer edge on the object. Notice how the inside if the ring isn't quite 'round', it looks chopped. If he had zoomed in it would have turned out much nicer.
