Flatt & Scruggs playing: Randy Lynn Rag
Uploaded by: erroredisk
Video Description:
This is my favorite bluegrass band of all time. This is rare footage of a USO show (for the military) some time in the 60's. This video shows Hylo Brown playing bass w/ the rest of the standard F &S line up: Paul Warren on fiddle, Earl and Lester on banjo and guitar respectively, Curly Seckler on mandolin, and Josh Graves on dobro. Here you can also see Earl sporting his '34 Granada w/it's Bow-Tie finger board which he had for a short time in the 60's.

I mean no disrespect to Bill Monroe at all. Love him. But Earl Scruggs brought the unique 3 finger style to the 5 string that added so much to Bluegrass, that you have to call him an innovator in American music. Bill would never really give him the spotlight he so deserved. Also Bill would not speak to Lester and Earl for years after they left him. Bill was the father, but L and E took Bluegrass to a new level!

I don't believe Earl has ever played a bowtie inlaid banjo, it's always his trusty old Granada! While Bill Monroe was indeed the father of bluegrass F&S took it to a whole new level.

Yeah he has dude. His Granada had a bow-tie finger board at one time. His neck has been changed at least once.

Jim's biggest thing that makes him sound better than Earl to some people is that he has his own sycopation and his own way to accent his notes. This and his top-noch tone. But you can't say Jim Mills can out pick Earl. Without Earl Jim woundn't have anything to play. They are both great and they are both different so you really can't say that Jim can out pick Earl.

I have to comment here...Growing up in coal mining region of WV in the '50's, this was one of the programs my dad watched on the black and white TV (we, the first to have such a TV!). My dad was a gifted musician himself, and I could never appreciate his admiration for Bluegrass till later in life. Thanks for posting this rare video!

To flatpikinguitar: I cannot recall Lester ever "cutting loose" on the guitar. But Earl does some real fancy guitar picking on songs like "I'm On My Way to Canaan Land." Lester was not a solo instrumentalist. His contribution was his voice.

Stanley couldn't ... ( 3 months ago by Kronedaddy)
Stanley couldn't carry Earl's banjo. I'll give it to the Stanley Bros. for great music and ballads, but Ralph wasn't a 10th the banjo player Earl was, couldn't keep his picks from clacking on the bridge he played so close to it. As for the best, neither was Don Reno, good player but never up to the standards of the MAN. Earl was, and still is the best. Even in a world of Bela Flecks and Scott Vestals, they'll tell you who's the King! Scruggs Rules.

Thanks for posting this. litobrancha has no idea what he's talking about. Stanley's playing was stilted and unimaginative. Don't get me wrong, I love Ralph, played shows with him, but had an awful tone from playing right on the bridge, as well as very little of anything but forward rolls. Anyway I loved Randy Lynn Rag, named after Earl's son.

For God's Sake - stop this shit about criticising good ole Earl !! He's simply the best 5-string picker there ever was - no contest. You ego-strung fools. Just accept it - there'll never be another Earl Scruggs.
