Vinnie DOES kinda look porn-ish with that Stach', but like Ron Jeremy he pulls it off. Playing like that, Vinnie could come out wearing a dress and still be worshipped. The man is not from this planet. Listen to his playing with Holdsworth or the Zappa stuff he did : you will either want to practice your ass off, or you will want to quit!

I'm sorry, but I still 'gotta say, I love the reference to Vinnie and porn. And yes, I know he would hate that, being a born-again Christian, God bless'm! I DON'T watch porn, but the rawness, the presentness, of vinnie's solos is so immediate, it's like watching sex, or electricity happening. It's completely viceral and immmediate, like an .....! Just amazing. What a gift to music. We're lucky to be witnessing it. I hope you all have the opportunity to see him play live. It's even Better!

He played matched for a period; this was that period. He used both for a while and switched back fully to traditional in the late 80s. By the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert he had made the switch to traditional.

but you can tell by looking he's just not comfortable with it....I love his style back then too...straight and powerful, not that it isn't cool now, but he tends to stray from the beat a lot now..

Trad gives you much more finnesse (sp?) on the snare. I changed form right-handed to left-handed on the set, so now I can't play trad. But I really miss it!! Trust me, there is a LOT more mobility and subtlety with trad! Even these days, when I want to play a really "Open" roll, I switch back to right-handed trad. It's just much more controllable, much more articulate!

its just a matter of what one can do. i think it was jojo mayer or maybe thomas lang who dvd himself saying something like the only advantage to trad is it looks like you know what your doing. to me people just look uncomfortably tilted w trad. i think most get stuck w it bc thats the way they were tought. if trad was really advantagous everyone would be trading w both hands!

What? Please say that again, with a little more clearity. "He tends to stray from the beat a lot "NOW"?" Are you serious? I think you're just not writing your text correctly (which we all have problems with, ha ha!) I dont' think you actually meant to say that he stray's from the beat "Now". He's even better than ever "Now"! You can't be serious. If you really think that, then you're missing the whole point of his music my friend!

The question here is, "Why did Vinnie opt. for matched?" I think he was just experimenting. Vinnie is the MAN who just tries different things, Always! That's what makes him so great!

Don't get me wrong at all, to be even as competent as vinnie would be a godsend, I admire him incredibly, but with Jeff Beck he plays off the beat a little too much. But that is just one show, I otherwise love his playing, and am always impressed with his creativity, style, technique and sheer talent. sorry to have flipped, but like Vinnie says, Kill your idols meaning believe in yourself, your abilities and the courage to blaze your own path....cheers to you too Kirk:)

Either way you slice it, this guy, here, is fucking "Un-caged", "Un-Limited", just a fucking animal on the drums!, a force with nothing stopping him! That's why we all LOVE to see him on the drums! That's why Weckl bores me. Vinnie just fucking says, "This is It!", with No-Holds-Barred. He holds Nothing back here. He gives it Everything! I LOVE that! I rarely see that in a drummer! Most of us, myself included, are controlled and safe! Vinnie is the complete antithesis of that! Just Go!

In many ways, as crazy as this sounds, this solo is even better that those amazing solo's we've seen on Utube of Vinnie at the Baked Potatoe! Simply because it's so fucking raw and unplanned! Don't get me wrong, Those solos are fucking out of this world! But this is so, I don't know, Angry? But in a good way, Ha ha:)))) It's just so powerful! Amazing!

i think weckl probably bores people because he's such a polished player. Vinnie can do the stuff that Weckl does and probably do it much better than him. Vinnie is becoming one of my favorites.
