Well, you can't exactly compare the standards of different eras to each other... otherwise you aren't entirely able to understand that certain time period.

What a great decade ... ( 1 week ago by cameraguy38)
What a great decade the 20's were. Economic boom was starting to be felt in North America and Europe, youth culture, jazz music, art deco, people finally letting their hair down after the horrors of WWI. Women had the vote and were able to show their knees in public for the first time since the Stone Age. It all came to a bitter end of course with the stock market crash in '29, but in terms of cultural revolution, the only decade coming remotely close was the 1960's, which gave us 'hippys' :|

camera, well said. I've just been to the Art Deco exhibition in Melbourne and found it incredibly inspiring. A lot of pre-hippy 60s fashions were borrowed from the 20s, my parents' era. Whenever they kvetched about something I wore, I'd point out that their generation had started it!

Good point. 20's flappers loved their beaded jewellery, beaded dresses and skirts. You could say the 60's mini just took the knee length flapper skirt that wee bit further. Even the shimmy dance from the 20's was popularised again in the 60's. The early hippy era was certainly marked by a nostalgia for the past, and what they saw as a simpler way of life, before the evils of modern technology really took hold.
Hippies yes, ... ( 1 week ago by VariedInterest)
Hippies yes, clueless, spoiled upper middle class youths whose idea of protest was throwing a party, what a great movement! Worse, a lot of those Hippies became the proud selfish-ignorance class known as Baby Boomers. There were good revolutions in the 60s though, just like the 20s, but the main failures of both stem mostly from the influence of corporate style capitalism and the cultural disease of media advertising.

It's inherently a ... ( 1 week ago by VariedInterest)
It's inherently a selfish act. Now, Twain said there is no completely unselfish act, and that's true. To some extent, a certain amount of selfishness is required for the survival of a species, but breeding in humans hasn't been about the survival of the species in hundreds of years. Breeding in humans is an act of inflated ego and false pride which says, "my genes are the ones that need passing on, a child from my loins is so valuable that it's the only thing I need to contribute to the world."

or it can be unselfish for the fact that you give life to a human being, an act of love towards your husband, and contribution to the world.
As long as there ... ( 1 week ago by VariedInterest)
As long as there are discarded and forgotten children in foster and orphan care systems, it's supremely arrogant and selfish to bring your own child into the world. Giving love to a wife or husband has nothing to do with breeding, it's a matter of mutual respect, sacrifice, encouragement and compassion. Contributing to the world? Maybe you can put your personal vanity on hold and really contribute to something meaningful and adopt. You think the kid you didn't have will give a shit?
(Hint: it has no ... ( 1 week ago by VariedInterest)
(Hint: it has no idea, it isn't a child until it gets farted out your wife's vagina!). On the other hand, the child you adopted already knows what it's like to be forgotten, they already know what it is to be discarded, and they will know what it is like when they feel love, or probably not because there are egomaniac assholes like you all over the place.

wow...maybe its stupidity to you but everyone is entititled to their own beliefs and to say that those beliefs are stupid, only shows how ignorant you are. i agree with januaryjewell and i think that what you're saying doesn't make any sense whatsoever. you say that adoption is better than giving birth, because giving birth is selfish. however the child you will adopt must have arrived on this planet somehow. how? by birth! and im all for adoption, i just think you're being narrow-minded.

I think you crawled out of the same polluted gene pool! If ever there was an argument in favour of pro-choice, you two are it. I didn't think a person could be more asinine than him, but then you chose to weigh in, boy howdy! To argue AGAINST adoption by saying those adopted kids had to be born somehow. You been out in the sun too long?! Or because a child is a human from conception? Moron, your bus is leaving! Abortion has nothing to do with choosing to breed or adopt! Youre indefensible.
