| I can see how Aretha could be thought of as One dimensional. But that's what makes her so great. She has mastered her own specific style that she doesn't really deviate from. NOBODY can be great at every and all styles. Good, maybe. But I prefer the finely polished finish of her arguably "One dimensional" style over some change-up, jack-of-all-styles artist who won't excel at any one particular dimension of their multiplicity. |

| aidandrew 1 dimensional? Have you ever heard Streisand's pitiful attempt to do soul with her hideous covers of "Sweet Inspiration" & "Grandma's Hands"? Nasal screeching at its worse. She should stay in her 1 dimensional world of pop standards. And we won't even talk about the little human lollipop's Ethel Merman imitations. Aretha's Columbia and Atlantic catalogs prove how versatile her career has been. Billie Holliday was a great stylist with limited voice. |

| aidandrew, Patsy Cline did have great voice, perhaps if she had not died so young she would have expanded outside of country. But wait by the time Aretha was 30(Cline's age at death) she already had mastered just about every popular music genre, jazz, blues, soul, r&r, pop, gospel,etc., Show me someone other than Aretha & Dinah Washington who cross musical borders that successfully. And Barbra and Celine wish they had what it takes to be invited into the "sweaty church choir". |
