I have a son that is autistic. I believe it is inaccurate to say that Stephen lives in his own world. Those that are autistic from what I have seen are desperately trying to figure out this world we live in. Often, one or more of their senses work against them and give them inaccurate information. As you can see, some senses (Stephen's sight) are amazingly keen. Imagine trying to listen to a conversation when your sight is taking in so much detail. Appreciate each person's gifts!

And if it is a recessive gene, it might be very helpful at sound point in the future, if some cataclysm befalls earth. One can imagine a scenario where interpersonal skills might not be that important, but super memory would be critical for survival. In that case, the "normal" people would soon die out and the new "savant" race would fill the niche.
I'd like to see THAT movie.

treated specially by his parents and so from a young age mimicked his brother and for about 8 or 9 yrs was treated in school and at home like he was autistic, within 3 weeks of my mum seeing him he was answering his name in class and getting involved, its a sad story as he has been taken into care from his family temp whilst they determine if he can live a normal life with them.
