I love this as much as Holdsworth or Gambale. There's something calm, rational, and thought provoking about Abercrombie's way of doing things.

yeah there's this certain soothing space in John's playing that I think Holdsworth has too, in all that flurry of notes he has...and recycling of ideas, and reflexes, and listening at the same time as you're playing. John A just gets better. Another great testimony to staying power. And the power of this great improvised art form.

I first saw Abercrombie live about 30 years ago......I was blown away then and still am today with his improv.

John Abercrombie is my favourite 'noodler' of all time. And I mean that respectfully. He's ALWAYS melodic, interesting, and still knows how to use space. His tone is fabulous, often 'aquatic'. It's amazing how he can go on and it's NEVER boring - not for me.

lionhearted99;
Abercrombie,like John McLaughlin, was one of the first, groundbreaking guitarists to fuse classical, jazz, rock, medieval etc.
His album "Timeless"(1974) inspired everyone (e.g. Metheny - Scofield-Gambale).
The thing about Abercrombie is that he's ALWAYS tastefully modest and chooses a distinctive tone.
I recall when Gil Evans used John in place of the late Jimi Hendrix.

I saw these guys back in '93. I immediately went out and bought their CD's. They are titled "Tactics", "While We're Young", and "Speak of the Devil". I don't know of any others.
