Maiya Singh, my teacher, testing out a friend's new Saaz.
The song: Bhuli Hui Yaadein - I think it's pretty old - 1960s or something. It's in Raag Yaman (Kalyaan/Kaliyaan) I'm on tabla. A TarShehnai is an Esraj with a horn attachment that produces the high Shehnai type sound. An Esraj is basically a variation of the Dilruba. It's like a hybrid Sitar

hi omgosh uno how ur ustad ji sort of slides up2 'sur' pa (i think it is lol)from a ga n then goes down(or up i shud say)to the lower dha.. n then almost bak to sa it is so beautiful. it's at about 7 seconds into the movie... cud u please please tell me the notes for that little bit, that leads up to it n finishes that movement off??? he makes it look very easy

i'll try -- basically it's .N R G M P then P R R G P G R .N .D .D .N .. .M .D .N .N R .D then Drag from .M to S that should do it .. it's impossible unless you know exactly what he's doing tho. There's too many embellishments. not a single note is played in a "Standard" way. Need to practice all his exercises.

sheez, listening to this rendering makes one realize how much Mukesh has either missed (or was made to gloss over in the interest of keeping it 'light' in the film)the actual nuances of the raga behind this song, yaman. Super play by this ustadji
