If it helps, I'm not a big shredder fan either. The stuff starts to sound like a typewriter after a while. However, the reason why I defend guys like Paul is because I'm familiar with their other work and I realize that having great facility simply allows you to do anything you want, (musically) on your instrument..not just shred. For instance, Paul does have the ability to play a classical piece if he wants.

Keep in mind, too..that these clips on youtube..are just that. They are clips. This is an unaccompanied thing at that. Personally, I feel it's very interesting to listen to. I had a guy argue with me that Albert King has more "soul". I finally got him to admit that he just personally likes the way Albert King plays. I later got him to admit that listening to Albert King playing a few bare pentatonic notes with no chord changes would be really boring.

He later admitted that Paul was more interesting unaccompanied simply because there's more going on and more texture. At lest Paul is outlining chords here. That's a product of great facility. Also,(contrary to what a lot of people might think) a very tight, staccato, aggressive rock feel..IS a feel. It's a feel that Paul is specifically going for in these examples and he's great at it. Again, a product of great facility. But, that's not all he does and he has the ability to do a lot more
