.. this was an incredibly eloquent piece.. and I believe very reasoned position you put forward.. the problem tho' is that, enemies of the Confederate symbols are motivated by emotion, and cannot be reached with reason.. hatred of the Confederate idealogy is underwritten by an EMOTIONAL HATRED of White America (specifically White Southerners).. reason isn't going to make headway with these haters.. that's my opinion...

The south economy was entirely based on slavery, the south was 100% of white bourgeois that way of life was only thank to slavery. The battle flagis not a love and peace and tolerance flag, it stands against the north and its values, it stands against actual America. Saddam Hussein waved it, and so do the neonazis. You have a good point. If southerners really want to defend their flag, they should focus less on the NAACP, and focus their attention on the KKK and other racist groups for using the flag and disgracing it. Don't blame NAACP for calling it a symbol of hate, when the KKK has made it a modern symbol of hate, and no one seems to object.

The Confederate Flag has been hijacked by white racists and you see German Neo-Nazis or British BNP members waving that flag, probably with little understanding of its cultural background.
The same goes for the English St George Flag.

The Confederate history was not so cut and dried. Add to that four Union states remained slave owning and many "freed" slaves were onliged to work gratis for the union.

The Confederate flag is legitimately seen as a symbol of hate - it is not about "Southern culture" unless you celebrate one of the founders of the KKK (Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate soldier and leader of the MASSACRE of black soldiers at Fort Pillow. Also look at the beginnings of the KKK as "ghosts of confederate soldiers." This has continued on through modern times. After the Supreme Court struck down anti-miscegenation laws in 1967, Alabama became the last state to remove such a law.

Forrest may have been in the KKK, so what? It was primarily made of Confederate and Union vets. Duh some former high ranking official will probably be in it. By 1871 at the official 5 year anniversary (in the Klan) they had around 41,000 former and current US troops on their membership roster. Some were even down there as part of the occupying force left behind. I would rather celebrate Forrest than Sherman, Sheridan, Watkins, Turchin among others in the Union Army. They massacred civilians!
