That's because they were solidly structured, not fragmented gags piled on top of each other like American sitcoms!

elric, how true. And the gags aren't even funny. Apart from 'Get Smart' and 'Addams Family', I can't think of any other "sitcom" which has even caused me to smile, let alone laugh. But Fawlty Towers...it's in a league of its own. Pure genius!

Yes, "Addams Family" & "Get Smart" are among the exceptions in American comedies, but look at their sources? "Addams Family" was based on comic strips published in The New Yorker and "Get Smart" was co-created by two of the funniest gag men in America, Mel Brooks & Buck Henry! Genius is genius, but it seemed to have been nurtured on British TV (and occasionally on American TV) 30 to 40 years ago. Where is it now?

elric, each time I visit the USA, I'm struck by the brilliance of a lot of American humour, but it just doesn't make it to sitcoms. I've just been introduced to George Carlin and laughed myself into fits. Pity that sitcoms haven't the courage to go in that direction.

Carlin tried to do a sitcom as well, but it didn't work because he was stuck playing a character that was suppose to be him, but it wasn't. If you want to see him act, see Kevin Smith's Jersey Chronicles, including Jersey Girl. He's in at least 3 of them. I agree with your view of the, sadly, late Mr. Carlin. Another genius who's now making the angels laugh after they forgave him for The 7 Dirty Words.

We have hundreds here too, but back in the '70s, there were 7 prominent ones that you couldn't say on television (and radio for that matter). A disc jockey in New York was fined for playing it on the air. It's on YouTube if you type in "George Carlin - 7 Dirty Words." The really funny thing is that you could get away with at least 2 of them today! As for the other 5...

Yes, as time passes, and tongues loosen, we forget that some words are taboo, and they enter ordinary everyday speech - once again!

it's lucky you said he's funny, he sues people who says he isn't and, weirdly, he wins. that's perhaps his greatest contribution to satire, he takes people to court for saying he has no sense of humour, brilliant!

Yep, he's gone. There's actually a small article on wikipedia. I can only imagine how horrible he must've really been but at least he, sorta, helped create the unforgettable Fawlty.
