The year in the Saxon Chronicles is 755 AD. The warrior kings of Powys, Wessex, and Mercia, vie for power.
Blaise, the prince of Powys, and Ricole, the Princess of Mercia, join forces when he escapes his bondage as a hostage and she evades an unwanted betrothal. Like a Mountain, Blaise of Powys' momentum builds, as you get closer to him. Underneath the green of youth, he is hard stone. Ricole princess of Mercia sizzles and blows, like wind and lightening. Like powerful elements they repel and attract each other.
Captured by the king of Mercia, Blaise of Powys manages to escape and lure princess Ricole. She thinks Blaise is taking her to her sister in Scotland to avoid a betrothal to Cuthred of Wessex. But Blaise takes her as a hostage to his father, King Elisedd of Powys.
Aethelbald refuses to ransom his daughter because his guards report that she willingly rode off with Blaise. Aethelbald claims that her chastity is ruined, though the accusation is false.
King Elisedd demands Ricole's ransom from her estranged betrothed. Cuthred of Wessex agrees to pay the ransom and claim the princess as his bride.
Blaise and the entire population of the castle of Dinas Bran have become enchanted with Princess Ricole. The Powys prince cannot bear the thought of Cuthred having her. Blaise must find a way to honor his sires command but still take Ricole for his bride.
King Elisedd knows his son's heart and tells Cuthred that the ransom exchange will be made only if he meets with Blaise alone. Blaise takes a band of men with him as he rides pillion with Ricole to the meeting place where the ransom will be made. Blaise orders his men to stay back as he and the princess ride ahead to meet Cuthred.
On the way to the meeting place Blaise tells Ricole that if Cuthred harms one hair on her head he will hunt him down and kill him. Ricole reminds Blaise that once she is wed to Cuthred they will never see each other again.
That eve when they camp, Blaise vows in this one night to make up for all the lonely nights to come. Their bodies ignite in a fevered passion. They lie entangled and entwined the entire night.
They next day they meet with Cuthred. The moment Blaise dismounts Cuthred charges brandishing his long Saxon sword. Blaise swings his silver blade in a counter attack. But Cuthred blocks the move and pushes Blaise to the ground.
He stands over the Powys prince ready to finish him off.
Ricole rushes forward. Cuthred slashes his blade downward as Ricole falls upon Blaise. Cuthred's sword unwittingly slashes her shoulder.
She bleeds on top of Blaise as she watches Cuthred's hidden troops move into view. She hears the pounding rhythm of horses and knows that Blaise's war band is approaching fast. Cuthred shoves Ricole aside and Blaise stands up
brandishing his sword. The two men fight, striking steel against steal. Ricole feels weak but manages to look at Cuthred's men. Ricole keeps Cuthred's men occupied until Blaise troops can arrive. She tells them that while their lord is occupied in his own battle she will command them as their queen to be. She is still bleeding and can barley stand when Blaise's troops attack Cuthred. Ricole watches Blaise strike Cuthred a deathblow before all goes black and she passes out.
Blaise and his men overpower Cuthred's troops and take the gold that was to ransom the princess. Blaise tends Ricole's wound and carries her on his horse back to Dinas Bran. When Ricole recovers King Elisedd has Blaise return her and the gold to Aethelbald with the message that Powys wants peace with Mercia. Aethelbald accepts the gold and gives Ricole to Blaise to seal the peace. Blaise and Ricole marry and thier love seals the peace between Powys and Mercia for many years to come.
