Heard that this song's time signature forms a pyramid. 4/4 3/4 2/4 1 2/4 3/4 4/4 maybe? Or a really slow 4/4

Not really.
I mean time signature wise. Most music is 4/4 2/4 sometimes in 6/8. But this song has an unusual beat...

||: 3/4 + 2/4 + 3/4 ::|| repeated throughout.
Each phrase is two reps of this.
Here's how to write the basic rhythm: | 3/4 two dotted eighths | 2/4 half note | 3/4 two dotted eighths. Happy listening. :)

Thanks much. I just stumbled across this piece, and was fascinated by the (seemingly) odd rhythm. I'm very conversant with time myself, figuring out Zappa stuff with relative ease. For some reason, I ws having trouble hearing "1" in this piece. So for the dude down there that said it's not 4/4... in one sense you're wrong. It's an extended 4. (3+2+3=8 - a multiple of 4)... just subdivided a different way, exactly as john6l says.

There was a rumour that track was called "Pyramid Song" because of it's rhythm, as if one counts carefully, they can hear 4 groups of 3 beats and 1 group of 4 beats (as a musical representation of a square-based pyramid: 4 faces with 3 sides, 1 face with 4 sides). 3+3+3+3+4= 1 bar

Yeah, this track has some pretty odd time signatures for real.. i've heard weirder, but this is quite progressive, yes. One of their best tunes also :)

IT is DEFINITELY not 4/4. It changes every measure. and then repeats.

Me thinks most of the confusion as to the meter of this piece is the lack of clarity as to where the consistant beat lies. To hear the consistant beat clearly, listen in about 3 minutes or so to the drummer's symbol "tings." Then go back and listen to the beginning again. It will be clear that the second piano chord occurs on the off-beat.--Professor John :o)

That's what I thought at first. I think Geekman1118's take on it is the best. It's like the faces of a pyramid, arranged 3:3:4:3:3. (the 4 triangles are the 3's, and the 4 is the square base).
here's the chords, after the words start.
F# F# Gmaj7* A6 A6 A6 Gmaj7 Gmaj7* F# F# F#m F#m E* E E Gmaj7 Gmaj7 Gmaj7* Gmaj7 Gmaj7 Notate all those chords as dotted quarters (a beat and a half), except the ones with asterisks are half notes (two beats). Finally, swing it. Voila, straight time.

that's why I love their music. They're never just 4/4 measured beats. The other day it took me the whole ride to work to realized that even though Bodysnatchers starts on the first note of the measure, all of a sudden, in the 7th measure right before the verse, it starts a half beat early. I just love their music arrangements :) And Thom's lazy eyelid. He's so dreamy!!

1st time F# F#- Gmaj7 - A6 A6 A6- Gmaj7 Gmaj7 - G G - F# F# - Gmaj7 - A6 A6 A6- Gmaj7 (this is only done once i think in the beginning) then its same thing cept: F# F#- Gmaj7 - A6 A6 A6- Gmaj7 Gmaj7 - Gmaj7 Gmaj7 - F# F# - Gmaj7 - A6 A6 A6- Gmaj7 something like that
Array ( 1 day ago by sqmuth)
alright... 1nce & 4 all:
lines r 8 quarters (8/4) (all chords dotted quarters, except asterisks get a half note): overall pattern: 3:3:4:3:3 (repeat)
Intro/outro: F# F# Gmaj7* A6 A6 A6 Gmaj7 Gmaj7* Gmaj7(add G top) Gmaj7(add G top) F#(add G top) F# Gmaj7* A6 A6 A6 Gmaj7 Gmaj7* Gmaj7 Gmaj7 Verses: F# F# Gmaj7* A6 A6 A6 Gmaj7 Gmaj7* F# F# F#m F#m E* E E Gmaj7 Gmaj7 Gmaj7* Gmaj7 Gmaj7 nthg 2 fr nthg 2 dbt (rpt) F#m F#m E* E E Gmaj7 Gmaj7 F#* F#
F# then go to outro (top pattern)
...and now that's ... ( 1 day ago by sqmuth)
...and now that's it's been dissected, it is still no less beautiful to hear. You can just play it (better), if you want to. The thing is perfect time, beginning to end... even the stuff that people have described as "rubato".
It's just emotionally interpreted 8/4 (4/4 whatever). It's straight time, masterfully and emotionally executed - from the top to the end. And you can count it yourself, if you can hear where the "clicks" are. (as johng6l says so well)
The funny thing ... ( 1 day ago by sqmuth)
The funny thing about the "controversy", is that the problem is not the RHYTHMIC pattern at all. The problem, as I see it is the subtle shifts in the chordal pattern (and how it mixes with the melody/harmony). The rhythm is unerringly straight. The chord progression, simple as it is, differs in subtle ways between intro/outro/verse... just enough to throw anybody for a loop. (makes it tough to find "1" and fools you into thinking 1 is in a different place than it is)

Phil Selway did a good job here alright, I listen to a lot of music and yet I've no idea where the beat has gone in this song, yet he still seems to have something going.
