Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue

Uploaded by: Tigkat
Video Description:
THE FIRST PART OF THE VIDEO HAS NO AUDIO. THIS IS ON PURPOSE. My name is Terri Keefer. I went to New Orleans for animal rescue, five weeks post Katrina. There was a temporary shelter housing all animals, about one hour outside of New Orleans. It was called Lamar-Dixon in Gonzales, LA. We took care of animals there, before most were transported out of state. No one in Louisiana would take them. The animals in the city were terrified, and many would run from us. Others were injured, sick, aggressive or already dead. We did everything we could to save just one animal. We spent two hours prying an air conditioner out of a window only to find the cat we were trying to save was dead. I want to commend all rescuers for their tireless efforts, hard work and willingness to live in extreme conditions (mosquitoes, 103 degree heat, lack of food). I had never attempted animal rescue before this, now it is a huge part of my life. Most of the photos I took while literally running from place to place. Some of the field rescue photos were generously given to me by HSUS to use for my non-profit, non-commercial, personal video account of my time spent there. Thanks for watching.
MUSIC: Celine Dion - Prayer - live on Larry King when she was speaking to him about her disgust of the rescue efforts during Katrina; The Carpenters - Bless the Beasts and the Children; Melissa Etheridge - Heal Me.

My New Orleans home didn't flood, so we were fine. But, seeing the devastation firsthand and experiencing the aftermath, I feel these animals were the LUCKY ones. They didn't drown or die of starvation. They made it to new homes. The wonderful people who saved them are my heros - God bless you!

What can I say? This video is so touching. I cried watching it. You did a wonderful thing to help those poor scared creatures. We lost everything to Katrina in New Orleans and I thank God that we took our cats and dog when we evacuated. If we had left them behind they would have drowned when our house flooded to the ceiling. It makes me cry just to think about it. You did a heroic thing. Thank you so much for caring about the "beasts". You have earned many stars in your crown!!!!!

I am a cat person, and the only dogs I love are Pits or Pit mixes. A few months ago I heard of a Pit mix, Zeus, who had come from Karina, and had been adoped back then But his new owner fell on hard times, and Zeus went to animal contron (NYCACC). He didnt find a home, so he was killed. He suffered through the water and starvation in New Orleans. Only to end up being killed for lack of a home in NYC. blame it on the petshop purse dogs. I do.

It was so funny, though, when I watched the video! flashbacks! oh my god! I saw our van!!! hahaha. it's wonderful that you documented everything. I'm in the process of finding all of my pictures and videos and uploading them. it brought a big smile to my face seeing this.thanks

This is another terrific video. We too have been very motivated by what happened to the pet-human families in the Storm. The people at Animal Rescue New Orleans -- ARNO -- is still reuniting people and they're amazing. Our new video was created entirely by people affected by the Storm -- everyone donated their time because we still want to try to call attention to what's going on. Love, Your PaLs, LuLu and LoLLy from "Rescue Dog Rock!"

I would love to work for the ASPCA, but I don't think I could keep my emotions in check. Especially if I were to see people abusing their animals. Nothing makes me more infuriated. God bless everyone who helps animals!
