Haggling is differant than making an irrelivent offer. Paying $40 for a $325 (No matter how little you care for the pen,) is not in any way fair or even reasonable. A good haggle for an item of that worth would be $310, $300; not $40. Would you trade a car for a can of cat food? No. He wouldn't have 'had fourty dollars more,'. More like he would have 'lost 285 dollars,'.
I am not being rude but you don't seem to get how unfair that would be.
