Most commercial rap today does not deal in metaphor, symbolism, satire or whimsy. The talking heads on Youtube offer commentary without context or explanation. In my mind, El-P's message is clear; we are creatures bound by social constructs. The pistol represents a generalized suspicion and mistrust we all carry around- we keep strangers at arms length and assume they are threatening and out to swindle our common decency. The overriding tone evokes our culture's overriding cynicism and apathy.

This is probably one of my favorite beats from El, up there with Phantom by Mr. Lif. And to anyone who thinks this shit should be mainstream, Can you imagine hearing little girls rave about how cute they think El is and then reciting the lyrics to a song like Habeas Corpses? It's underground for a reason
