This is the first ... ( 4 months ago by BayAreaBiker2001)
This is the first time I've heard this piece sung by a soprano. With Handel being who he is, this is very effective. It is as though Handel did not know what voice types would be available, so he wrote his music to be effective with all voice types, just as Bach's music is effective on all instruments.

The original version is for bass. When Handel heard a castrato sing this, he rescored for alto. Both versions are often performed.
i disagree with the ... ( 3 months ago by oleander1684)
i disagree with the remark about kirkby's "superficial naive appeal." it's true that bartoli is more dramatic, but i think it's a waste of time to compare such talented women. although bartoli's voice is more powerful, kirkby's lack of volume does not make her weak. as for "voices without vibrato," obviously whoever said this was not listening very carefully. not only is she using vibrato, but how can her voice be pretentious? it's beautiful, and her musicianship is impeccable.

I have to say that she does sing effortlessly, and that I have no belief in the notion that she is miming in this clip.

He intended us to be innocent and pure...but not naive. The first sin was committed by being prideful and naive. Jesus even told us to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves". Hope it helps :)

Beautiful interpretation. She just sings in a completely different style than divas such as Bartoli or Jo. It seems some of you cannot accept this. But she's amazing too.

I think a good singer should be able to sing in straight tone and with vibrato depending on what style they need to execute.

A truly unique voice.
Wonderful cleanliness of tone, and the ornaments are superb.
I like this type of Handel singng, but I also like the bigger tremulous voices too.
I don't think there's right and wrong - all types of approaches to Handel have their merits.

Eh, not necessarily. A good singer should just be able to know what styles they can pull off. Most voices can't switch back and forth much at all.

Wouldn't you say a good deal of style has to do with how vibrato is executed?
Well... yes, that ... ( 1 month ago by currymuttonpizza)
Well... yes, that was my point to begin with. I meant to say that it's often unhealthy to try to force a style (and vibrato type) on yourself if it doesn't fit what you're physically capable of singing. It's not necessarily a question of talent, it's a question of being physically able or unable to perform certain repertoire.

Such an angelic voice...Just lovely. Much better for this kind of repertoire than singers that use too much vibratto.
