The French Connection - "The Chase"

Video Description:
After French hitman Nicoli (Marcel Bozzuffi) tries to assasinate New York City detective Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman)and misses, they begin one of movie history's greatest chase scenes through the streets of New York and an elevated train. Hackman, who won an Academy Award for his performance wasn't director Friedkin's first choice. He wanted Jackie Gleason, and then Jimmy Breslin, who as a lifelong New Yorker, didn't drive and would never be able to do the chase scene.

They actually wern't going fast, I saw in some magic of hollywood thing that they sped the parts where he was driving up to make it appear he was keeping up with him.

I have a video on my channel where Friedkin says that the stunt driver "drove the car at around 90mph over 26 city blocks."
You can usually tell when they speed up a video. They tried that in some of the chase scenes in "The Road Warrior" and it looked pretty fake.

It really does depend on the line. Coney Island in the off season is not that crowded and might have traffic close to what's shown. The chase is not taking place in any of the areas you mentioned. For many other reasons the things not realistic but I don't think this is one of them.

Well it is still unlikely for chase. In NYC car chases end in 2 minutes. It's not like Los Angeles where highways and roads are so wide that a chase can go on for the whole day.
But Coney Island towards the final segments is very little. However anywhere else on D,F, N, or Q lines when elevated in Brooklyn are very busy with so many cars not moving and pedestrians jaywalking.

When I get back in Ny, I will try to check it out. Two of the big problems is the emergency cord and also by my recolection, trains around the Coney Island yards almost always stop or are backed up from train traffic. also, I think following the train from underneath in a car would be extremely hard.
One thing to remember is that NY in the 70's had more desolate areas than it does today.

Well some areas today in the city become desolate especially at night. But alot areas have improved thanks to Giuliani and gentrification.

I'm aiming to be a film maker and films like this are the reason. With directors cheating so much with crapy CGI, you just don't get these thrilling scenes and films anymore. I will steer clear of it all if I do get to make films and make them more like the FC, I promise.

actually, the system had cars in the past with locked doors. the 67' long "BMT standards" were also beyond the safty limit that allows them to keep 60' cars unlocked. They are also unlocked because on cars bought between WWII and the 1980s require the conductor to change cars to switch sides. before that, the conductor would stand between cars, and after the 1980s, cars with cabs all the way across have been bought.

something cool about this chase, this chase wasnt approved by the state or county, this chase was done illegaly. pretty cool
