Can anyone top this ... ( 6 months ago by oldmusicman2007)
Can anyone top this? I am one of the lucky few who saw Gram Parsons perform. He and his band The Flying Burrito Brothers opened for Jim Morrison and the Doors at the Aquarius Theater on Sunset in Hollywood, and as I recall it was a free concert in 1968! Those were indeed the good old days. oldmusicman.

Everyone knows I love Emmylou like no ones business but am afraid I have to put Gram Parsons in with Townes Van Zandt. Both were two of the best song writers the world has ever seen and had a vision of music and it was in them to the hilt but other people always did their music better. For instance "Hickory Wind" is beautiful lyrics but The Seldom Scene own the song in performing, in my opinion and all this is just that, my opinion and is worth what you paid for it.

Emmylou is beautiful but in watching her perform (the only place I have ever seen her) she has got to be one of the most feminine women I have ever seen too and it just makes her more beautiful

Yes,Gram was dealt a great injustice by the country music people in his time....only many years after his untimely death did they realise what a huge talent he was.Gram definitely deserves more respect and recognition.
It would have been ... ( 4 months ago by johnwalterm)
It would have been even more sad had the country industry accepted Gram because that would have meant Gram would have either bent to thier will or would have have been just another mainstream country writer/singer. Besides, it wasn't like he didn't find his niche. He was part of The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds and helped write with the Stones. He was a rock and roll pioneer. Who cares if country didn't accept him?

Gram was treated so shabbily by Ralph Emery that I can hardly stand to see him on T.V.

Such a shame this sort of Country music is no longer being played on the radio today. Instead we get empty-headed tunes written for a dumbed-down audience.

I doubt the current country audience is dumbed down. In fact if it were researched I bet the audience is far more educated than it ever was.
What the current country crowd IS now that it wasn't back then is younger there are a lot more female buyers. They're not as much into sad songs. They like upbeat and positive songs.
Emmylou helped that happen.

Amen! Gram the poet! Too bad he couldn't put down the tequila and heroin to live longer and give us more truths. He was the original alt country guy. We love you Gram!

My ass. the current country crowd is the old easy listening crowd.
If that were true ... ( 3 months ago by johnwalterm)
If that were true then that's what the stations would be playing. They're driven by money. Your crowd isn't spending the money on music that the younger demographic is. It's about money, period.
You're probably ... ( 3 months ago by rosecity44)
You're probably right. I just find the "new" country music to be boring and without depth. I probably would have liked it when I was in high school. Bluegrass and Alt Country are gaining in popularity, so I think the whole country "thing" is coming around again. Personally I enjoy bluegrass... my banjo playing teen got me into that genre.
Take care.

I'm an old musician, too, and I saw the FBB @ the Aquarius sharing the bill with Bread in the summer of '69. Free show sponsored by A&M. I don't think the FBB were playing out until after the 1st record came out in early '69. Gram was so heckled by the rock crowd for his clothes and sequin heeled boots, that he dropped his tele to the stage and walked off in the middle of a song. I saw him backstage and his face was lined with tears.

I was spellbound watching that performance clip at the end where he's singing right to you as if he was naked and shameless...which was basically what he was...so honest and raw.

That must of been cool to be a part of that time. Did you go to Altamont, Isle Of White, Monterey Pop, Woodstock? Also who do you think was the biggest act in 69'? Im 40 but was always fascinated by Rock N Roll and the whole movement from the 60's into the 70's.
