David Kelley: The future of design is human-centered

Uploaded by: TEDtalksDirector
Video Description:
http://www.ted.com Low-key and thoughtful, IDEO founder David Kelley seems the antithesis of the "design star" -- and indeed, he says that product design, within the past two decades, has become much less about the design and more about the user who'll be experiencing it. In this classic 2002 talk, he shares some video of products coming out of IDEO, including Prada's famous high-tech dressing rooms, "Dilbert's ultimate cubicle," and a gotta-have-it gadget called Spyfish. He finishes by discussing a project he's passionate about: ApproTEC -- now called KickStart -- offering designs that give Kenyans the means to end poverty.

What a colossal waste of energy and resources. While the serious world is arguing on reducing carbon footprints and reducing independency on oil, these chumps are making this evermore expensive crap. Disgraceful.

Hey now, rich kids need jobs too and there are only so many pr and marketing jobs to go round. Someone has to make a cubicle which is 100 times worse than ever before and be smug about it.

Rich kids don't need jobs... it's just that their parents are such misers they want their kids to 'go out and make something of yourself' - Bill Gates isn't even considering leaving his personal fortune to his kids.

what is the point ... ( 9 months ago by playadude2006)
what is the point of reducing carbon footprints and reducing independency on oil if we can't keep people emotionally stable to live? We must take some direction towards the future- these are simply human/user centered proposals. Humans have needs and desires which we must adress. We are all human, after all. We could reduce our energy expenditure and phase out our species altogether, but what purpose would that serve us, as humans?

I doubt you'll see a spy-fish in every household, dude. Who is this toy for? Arm-chair scuba-diving? It is a WASTE. That was my point. I agree we should keep building stuff but not stuff that costs a lot and is useless.

Cost is a delusion; the question isn't "How much does it cost?" The question is do we have the resources?" And of cours this is a big resounding YES.
