In 1976 I was 17 when the radio first played this and I cried for three days! She nailed the attitudes.

It's funny how much the world has changed since Janis crooned this Anthem For The Unpopular... and yet, "those of us with average faces, lacking in the social graces" remains as much a part of youth now as then. Timeless... poignant... beautiful.

If you read Janis's autobiography, she mentions that she had a lot of problems with her drummer around this time... personal problems. So it's possible he was "being bad" on purpose.
Love the guitar solo, BTW.

At Seventeen... yeah...this song was one of MY faves at 17 but I WAS the cheerleader...had the clear skin smile... green eyes straight dark hair...didn't matter... I STILL was so insecure. Only goes to show that we all face the same stuff as teens...the insecurity of fitting in...are we pretty enough... are we smart enough...no prom queen here but happy with my life. Hope you all are, too!

I remember this song so well. I was that person, only I was male. Pimply-faced and skinny with an unruly cowlick. Nondiscript in every way. Now, I see so many fat people and thank the gods, all of 'em for staying skinny. I delight in telling fat people to loose some weight.

I've only known this song for the last few years, and like a previous commentator I was also awkward and strange to my fellows. Nevertheless, a powerful song, and time doesn't appear to have affected Janis' ability to sing it with true emotion.

I heard this on the Simpsons one night when I was watching it with my brother. It was playing during a scene with Homer walking alone at night, sad and lonely (i don't remember why, or what the episode was about).
Anyway, I'm 18 and I hadn't heard this song before. They only played the beginning, but I got so teary-eyed I discreetly left the room. That's never happened before. Thank you, Janis, wherever you are.

Shas: I'm not ... ( 1 week ago by cobalt100)
Shas: I'm not really hurting them. I'm trying to help them gain some self-respect. Besides, most of the fat slobs are women. P.S. Back when I was seventeen, I was also an atheist which made it even worse. And I was attending a Catholic school at that time.
"Fat slobs"? No, ... ( 1 week ago by shas1814)
"Fat slobs"? No, this is not compassion, Cobalt. Did your life improve because people came up to you and said "Stop being a skinny, pimply nerd"? Probably not. You might try something like "Hi. You're looking happy today." Or "Hi. You seem tired. Can I carry that parcel for you?" Or maybe even just "Hi."

I believe it was El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Homer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer), one of the most epic and deep episodes ever, the newer ones are nothing compared to the golden years of The Simpsons.

Okay, I'll try that out. I'll try to bring some sunshine into someone's life in this dreadful, gloomy climate in Oregon which isn't worth a half an onion.

At Seventeen was a hit when I was a totally miserable teenager, & after all these years it still makes me cry.
Thank you, Janis, for your beautiful & poingnant song.
