I'm Vietnamese and I've learned Japanese and English for years. From my point of view, his skill is incredible in this vid. Not only he put so much spirit in acting, but he knows all the points to make it interesting. There're 2 technics that I can point out: the rising intonation at "the tail" MU at the end of "CHIIMU"( team), and the alteration of accent in linked word.

in CHIIMU(we either heal as a team), he raised the intonation at MU. It's the way Japanese usually do when they speak Japanese, but it become so weird when applied to Japanese-English, because it drives attention to the part "MU".

Japanese has the high-low accent, while English has strong-weak one. So they use that high-low accent to simulate English, and it is somehow OK. But Japanese has a weird rule that change words' high-low pitch when 2 words are linked. Like HAru(spring) and yaSUMI(break) cam be linked to creat haRUYAsumi( spring break). And when they apply this rule to English, it's so weird because the Jap-Enlish words' accent are no longer sound like the original English.

This is very strange. I can't work out if this is a joke, or if the speaker in the video is intentionally over-emphasising the Japanese accent to help potential imitators identify key features.

Interesting, he's pretty good if he's imitating the movie. Puts some real emotion into it, I think.
I'm curious though, what do English speakers sound like when they speak Japanese? Do Japanese find us hard to understand when we try to speak their language?

The English language contains all the phonetics that Japanese has, so I would assume that once an English speaking person learns Japanese it's rather simple for 'em to understand - all you'd have to work on is the accent most likely. I might be wrong. :)

Most languages are tonal and I imagine Japanese to be the same, often what we find funny is not what is said but the tone it's said in, I once pointed this out to a South African friend who was having a little trouble understanding some stuff, all I did was say the same thing four times over but in a different tone each time to show him the difference.
i agrea. You ... ( 2 weeks ago by xXxlllManHacklllxXx)
i agrea. You english guys have a very specific tone... i can almost spell foreigns language spoken words easily but it's the english language i had the most difficulties. The japanese uses a tone wich is very similar the tone we use to speak the french in europe. (For example, canadians use a more english tone and sometimes it's really hard to understand what they say, even they uses the same language we do! No offense for the canadians here :) )
