Dolphin Dance - Herbie Hancock tune

Uploaded by: 7notemode
Video Description:
This Hancock tune is usually played in a restrained, laid back style, i.e. with a "west coast cool jazz" feel. The brilliant and unusual chord changes give this piece a floating feeling that does away with the usual dynamic arcs of tension and resolution found in more traditional "I-VI-II-V-I" type jazz compositions. In order to make it sound a little bit different, I decided to play it slightly uptempo and to play the changes as if it called for the same dynamic rise and fall of more traditional tunes, even when that is not what the chords changes are calling for, at least from my perspective.
Something else I try to do in order to switch it up a bit is to vary my comping between light and dense voicings. I play two or three notes that imply a chord without explicitly stating it, or I try to go really dense, with lots of color tones to obscure the underlying chord. That is pretty muc
h what I was thinking when I played this piece.

Very nice. You said your teacher just told you that you should listen to other jazz pianists and learn to improvise using some of their techniques, and then create your own style from what you've learnt; would you recommend that? I've played classical for 8 years, and I've got an accurate and sound technique, so would you recommend simply listening to some jazz first and THEN going back to my teacher to start getting help on refining my style?

Wonderful playing. I come from a classic background. I was wondering if you could give me some tips for starting to play this variety of music. I have picked out a book from Mark Levine.
Do you have any transcriptions of your performances?

I've been listening to your music for the past..I'd say..hour and a half. I love it, the technique and cleanliness is amazing. All the chords and everything fit so well together. Jazz theory is an amazing thing to know (it's one thing I wish I had time to learn right now).
