Hey - great video! I am Randy's sister. It is great for us to see this since Randy is in poor health and not playing much these days. Randy's son Shawn Purcell is an amazing jazz guitarist. Shawn travelled with his mom and dad with Maynard when he was in preschool. Seems the experience taught him alot about music.

He's a hell of a man to play with. I got a very brief opportunity to play with him while i was in high school; our jazz director was a personal acquaintance of his. We did a sort of joint concert where we started out, and then he came out with Big Bop Nouveau, and we finished the concert with Gonna Fly Now with everyone. All i can really say about that is that i've been playing for about 16 years now, and have nowhere close to the control he has in the upper register.

I've commented on this vid twice before. It gets me every time. Bigbands just don't get any better than this. I don't care what anyone says. I agree with the comment earlier in regards to Maynardthe2nd - you are a wanker! I'll stick the original I reckon.

Big bands are brilliant but ahh its Maynard Furguson! Itunbeliaveable. He is the start ofthescreamer trumpeti mean really that is llike as high asa piccolocan go his moutpeice mustbe reallly shallow. I have to say i'm not really fond of the original Elton John version of the songbut thecovermakes me love it pop turned into jazz what could be better.

You too, need to get out in the world a lot more! Maynard was a lot of fun in the seventies, but there were, and are, a LOT of big bands that were/are better, including early MF bands.

The bands of Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Louie Bellson, Don Ellis, Don Menza, just to name a few, could all play better than, and 'scream' the ears off of MF's bands. Even Harry Connick, Jr's, Brian Setzer's, and Michael Buble's bands are all better than MF's bands typically were. These bands are just as tight in concert as they were in studio!
MF's bands were usually better in recording sessions, when they had guests & technical assistance. But in concert they were often sloppy& unbalanced.

Guess what guys, there won't be another like Maynard. Yea, there were alot of big bands, some better than others. Maynard had a string of good or great ones over decades and noone can match his playing in the upper register and look how effortless it was for him.
