The string sample is from the Andrew Loog Oldham, the Stones' first manager, version of the Last Time. The bit they use is in the first 20 seconds of the original. But Klein claimed that it was enough to get a full Jagger/Richards credit.
There is an interview with Keef out there where he is unmoved about the controversy saying next time they should write a whole song.

No, the strings intro is original, but based off of the melodies in the stones orchestral mix, but the part that is identical in both songs is the chord progression, and the drums. but the uplifting and heartfelt lyrics are entirely a creation of richard ashcroft.
