Lainie Kazan - "Porgy" & "Trolley Song"

Uploaded by: treehorne
Video Description:
Here are two songs that Lainie Kazan sang on the Dean Martin Show. The first is "I Loves You, Porgy" (From George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess") in which she shows a classic bent (and a classic profile reminiscent of the person for whom she was probably understudying when she sang this....)
The second clip is her singing the Judy Garland classic "The Trolley Song" from "Meet Me In St. Louis" (and sporting quite the tan)

I saw her at The Huntington Hartford Theater in Hollywood back in the early 80's. She was in a show that opened with Patty Andrews, then Eartha Kitt, then Della Reese & Lainie closed the show with a show-stopping combo of this song w/"His Is The Music That Makes Me Dance." They had to peal me out of my chair.

I'm sorry but white people should not be allowed to sing this song. This song is about a negor female slave, begging her husband, boyfriend of what ever he is, not to let her get rapped by the white slave master. And plus this woman sound a mess. This song is best when song by Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday.

Ok, if you put a comment up here, please have some knowledge of the subject : "Porgy & Bess" was first performed in 1935 with in the leads Anne Brown and Todd Duncan, both legitimate opera voices..whatever jazz performers have made of it later on it is still an opera stil very widely performed as such. So does your comment suggest that black performers shouldn't be singing opera and stick to tap dancing and jazz ???? hyperbole, isn't it...but just maybe you get my point.

Well said! Oh yeah, and by the way lenasastar, one of the greatest opera singers in history is black! Ever heard of Leontyne Price? Who by the way also performed this song.

No you get some knowledge b4 u comment. 1st of all I'm black and white. I'm not trying to be racist. I'm just saying that the lyrics of this song call for a black singer, rather they be jazz, pop, opera, r&b, or techno I don't care what genre, just as long as their black, or at least sound or look black. 2nd I know that there are black opera singers- Hello Marian Anderson? 3rd I know about Porgy and Bess, I've done my research. And again this song is best song by Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald.
You are being more ... ( 3 months ago by treehorne)
You are being more than a tad racist (whether you are trying to be or not), as the inverse to your statement is that only white singers should sing Puccini or Mozart, as the subject matter and characters are white European in nature. There is nothing in the lyrics, other than them being written in a pidgin-esque dialect, to indicate race or slavery. They can be sung by almost anybody - even men. And you would make a much better argument if you used the spellcheck feature on your computer...
It is entirely ... ( 3 months ago by ImpatraZ)
It is entirely possible to interpret the song from more than one perspective, but I understand that some people lack that kind diversity. Also, I'm black, too, and I sure as hell interpreted your comment as being racist.
Also, just because YOU think the best version is by Nina, does not make it so in any way. If anything, the song belongs to whomever sang it first, and that was not Nina or Ella.

FYI: "Porgy and Bess" does not deal with slavery, as it is based on "Catfish Row" which is set in SC in 1930. The man Bess wants rescuing from is Sportin' Life - her black pimp and a drug dealer.

Streisand recorded a Porgy and Bess medley back in the 80's, but I assume you aren't ok with that either because shes white and couldn't possibly do the song justice? you're an idiot.

Really? Didn't know that I stand corrected. I can admit when I'm wrong.
Ok whatever you people are way to sensitive about this woman. I mean she's no Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Carmen Mcrae or Shirley Horn she's a nobody! lol PS Nina sings this song the BEST! Better than this woman! Oh and Nina is bllllaaaaccccckkkkk

Fantastic singing and fantastic singer!!!....I loved this song since I first played it when I was a disc jockey in Miami in the lates 60's. I met her many years ago when she visited the station that I worked at. I would love to see her again. Outstanding singer and beautiful person inside and out!

Strong voice, strong character, powerful emotion obviously present. All in all one of the most powerful performers then *and* now. Maybe we could be more positive and stop being so common in the presence of a Lainie Kazan.
