The love-hate element of the lyric: faggot is used to rhyme with maggot, but also to reference the sexual performance problems of many male substance abusers. MacGowan is a A-class substance abuser, making Keith, Moon or Richards, seem rank amateurs. The word shows up at a point, in the lyric, where the woman wants to deeply insult, hurt, the man. What better than to attribute his sexual problems to being a faggot, not caring for women. Crude, for sure, but effective. Guys get it!

Yes. I agree. Patti Smith's "Piss Factory" was also a clear reference to her suffering from thrush, and when PJ Harvey covered "Moody River" it was 'cos she was on the rag. Get a grip pal. He lyrically calls himsefl a faggot and a maggot, but he also lyricaly calls the woman an old slut on junk. Folk'll say anything, as I think you're aware.
