As I see it the senate is a necessary instrument to equal the power between the states since all the states have the same number of delegates in the senate unregarding their population. Unlike the house of representatives were the states have different numbers of delegates regarding their population. In a federation of independent states it is obvious that the different members should have the same ability to influence the development of the federation.

the problem is, lets say all the people in the U.S. move to oklahoma. i live in california and a friend of mine lives in florida. me and my friend have more say then the whole country. now california has a big population so your saying they could pass laws that help only california, well the other states would vote it down. thats the beauty of a true democracy

The reason we have the senete is to have a level of legislative branch that has equal representation for all the states if there was no senete states with a larger population would run the contry that is why a bicameral congress exists that is what the founding fathers thought up to solve the great compromise and wild boy if you were the only one in missori the reason for the house is votes based on population if it gets through it goes to the senete so smaller population states get a say

The real question is whether or not the federal government is taking power away from the States or not, a question which every State is equally concerned. Large States do not want to give up their power any more than small States. The modern Senate has never blocked legislation on the grounds that it would negatively affect small States. The senate is actually concerned with protecting a very different opulent minority.

You think that smaller states need more representation for protection against harmful federal legislation. This is a false assumption because federal legislation imposes itself equally on every State. Federal law that harms small States will also harm large States.

I am not talking about agendas i am talking about the senete being a failsafe to keep stupid laws from passing and i am not saying there is a "big state agenda" i am saying for example there is a bill being put through congress first the house it is passed only by the votes of a few large states while smaller states oppose the bill but dont have as much say then the bill is sent to the senete where everyone has the same amount of say in the bills passage that is what the senete is there to do

Actually the majority of governments operate without upper houses. Do the governments of the UK and France function? Talk about presenting unsupported opinions. My point to FireRupee was that legislatures do exist and function without upper houses. Now on to your point. Actually, France and the UK do have states with their own separtate powers, similare to ours. Ever heard of Scotland and Whales? France has even more "proivincial" govenments, not to mention local. The House is less corruptable because 1) it costs much less money to run for a House seat and 2) individual Representatives do not hold much power, as Senators do. I agree with you, there will still be corruption when the Senate is abolished, however, the level of corruption will be greatly redu
