Was this the original 'pop' recording of sloop john b, ie. PRIOR to the Beach Boys' version? If not, which group did precede that BB's version?
The original ... ( 7 months ago by debobwan)
The original Kingston Trio (Bob Shane, Dave Guard and Nick Reynolds) recorded Sloop John B before the Beachboys did. Perfoming it here is the current Kingston Trio lineup of George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty.

Thank you, debobwan. Just for clarity, did any other group also record it? And/or, was it the K Trio version that was popularized and on the 'hit parade'?

I think this song was recorded by a lot others, at least 8 or 10 other artists. But the Beachboys had the big hit on it.

There is also a great Johnny Cash version of this song. Look it up on YouTube. The song itself is a classic folk song and was recorded for the first time somewhere in the 1920's.

Hmmm.... pretty good. The only thing "Kingston Trio" original is the going back to 6 string guitar, tenor guitar and banjo. Not that I'm complaining, though. I'll still pull out the old git box and play along.

not quite the same lyrics the Beach Boys used, but as I am a die hard fan, I will always say the BB version is much better, and thats not knocking the Kingston Trio as I enjoy listening to them sing.
Interesting point, ... ( 4 months ago by sensei48)
Interesting point, though - you know that Al J. was a big KT fan and Brian W. wasn't. The KT version originally (1958) was slow, somber, almost bluesy. The BB did it more like the Weavers (who first recorded it) - but the BB version is stunning in vocals and harmony. Both the BB and KT versions are classics but very different. This KT troupe, however, is doing something rather more like the BB than their own original arrangement.

No disrespect to these guys, but the 1960's folk duo Bud & Travis did it best. Well, certainly differently! Much more up-tempo, and as they themselves introduced it "Those of you who know the song, forget it, please don't sing". There are two versions of Bud & Travis's recording available... if you're lucky enough to find it, listen to the one with the extended intro and patter. Brilliant!

lovely addicting! I can't stop watching it,lol! sorry TitanicTarn, but the Beach Boys' version isn't the original, this song is much older than them. and I disagree from you, I don't think their version is better than this one. but this is only my point of view, you know.

Partly right. The BB Al Jardine was a KT fan and got the song from the KT's first album, as he attests in print and on video. BUT - the original KT version (1958) was VERY different from this - slower, quieter. This troupe of the KT is doing something rather like the BB arrangement.

Actually, Titanic, it is a West Indian folk song, first recorded on record in the 1930s. I remember Jim Ed Brown and sisters singing it at the Grand Ole Oprey in the 50s, but was actually transcribed by the famous 50s folk group The Weavers.
