Not so. It's a traditional song. Check any reliable source. The Trio's version - and they lost a copyright suit over this - belongs to Warner,Proffitt, and Lomax from 1947 - when the Smothers were 8 and 10 years old respectively. Google search "tom dooley copyright" for the full legal story.

I am a big fan of the Kingston Trio and I never heard about this 1981 reunion concert untill now. I remember buying a very nice striped short sleeve shirt which looked exactly like the ones they wore on one of their albums. Sorry to hear about Dave Guards passing.

Tom Dooley was called Tom Dula. His grave is about 50 miles from my mother. His grave is 20 miles south of Wilkesboro NC. The grave is not marked anymore due to vandalism
