Nothing to do with Ireland It was written by a Scotsman about a Scotsman (though it is for ALL the fallen) Eric Bogle wrote the song and sung it first and better BTW In the Lyrics it even says did the Pipes play the 'Flowers of the forest' a Scottish lament for the dead

I think the story about if there really was a "Willie McBride" was that Bogle made the name up. However, by chance (since so many died) CWGC does have a "William McBride" who died at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, who was 19. He is buried in one of the many CWGC in the area
