Mehdi-And I'd suggest you go off of the grid and inquire about Domingo's behind the scenes Macchiavellian business practices and feudal work ethic. But in front of the scenes, he carried a big smile, used lots of fancy verbiages, was kind to his fan base and sold them his inferior product by being a cunning salesman. I'd suggest you all think twice before applauding someone!

The man, if it needs saying, is a marvel. Here is Domingo, one of the 20th-century's greatest tenors extending his hegemony into the 21st and, in his sixties, tackling, and triumphing in, yet another new role.

60th Birthday Concert - The Speeches
Placido is a very important cultural treasure we share with the world. New York City is proud of his achievements and delighted to join opera lovers everywhere in wishing him Happy Birthday and many many more. I'm declaring today, in the City of New York, Placido Domingo Day. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani

We are here to honor Placido Domingo on the occasion of his 60th birthday, but you know, I think I've got it a little wrong, I've got it backwards. For it is Placido who for an astonishing 33 seasons has honored us. (...) Joe Volpe

Trying to explain the phenomenon of Placido Domingo cannot be done by only counting statistics, because Placido is not about numbers, he's about quality. His drive for perfection tied to an insatiable musical and intellectual curiosity results in a unique portayal every time he steps on the stage. And if you consider his range of repertory you realize it's unique in our history. (...) We are all honored to be living in The Age of Placido Domingo. Joe Volpe

Quoting Conductor Sir Georg Solti, "Opera is not production or theatre; opera is music." I don't believe Domingo played a good Cavaradosi, because this aria in particular has demanding requirements of pianissimi. I like Domingo, but let's be realistic.

Solti has his opinion, I have mine (and they're apparently different). Opera is not all about music. Especially Puccini's works. Now try to do pianissimi on a roof in the open air. I never said THIS was the best performance. It's sill great to me, but he has done much better.

Guys all of you who like to criticise so much have to understand that everyboddy has his/her own taste and you hae to respect that. Every flower ha its own smell and smbd might like it smbd might not. Domingo is not my faorite tenor, but he sings E Lucevan Le Stelle in his own way and its so beautiful for many ppl. I like it too, it's not alway about technical issues, sometimes emotions and feelings an artist has make u like his/her performance.

because one thing domingo was best known for was his cavaradosi. he has one of the BEST renditions of e lucevan and recondita ever recorded. honestly, i dont like caruso's recording of this compared to domingo, corelli, lanza.

Well, I listened to the recording, and it was better than this mess, but better than Caruso?! Listen to the early piano recordings. You'll see what I mean.

Placido sings this beetter than the "other two" in my opinion; he really gets across the desperate hoplessness of Cavaradossi's situation.

Right! You must know this opera was REALLY shooted at the right times: it started at 12 AM in the church, then at 8 PM to Scarpia's Palace(now residence of France Embassy)and, afterwards, to Castel Sant'Angelo at 6AM. During the church scene Domingo fell and, limping, kept on singing; it was necessary to bandage his hakle in order to performe the remaining scenes.
